Buh-Buh Ray Dudley brought this to everyone's attention with this cool tweet:

https://twitter.com/bullyray5150/status/961662866540593153

Happy 100th Birthday in Heaven to “The Hollywood Fashion Plate” “Classy Freddie Blassie”

An absolute honor to have known and become friendly with this man.

Last thing Freddie ever said in a wrestling ring was, “Devon...Get the Tables.”

Respect.

When I first started watching wrestling in '72, I was able to see Blassie weekly on the Los Angeles TV from the Olympic Auditorium. Sure enough, a few months later he comes in to the WWWF. He was larger than life. He was a heel over here on the east coast. He would start biting jobbers and they would put a big red X over the screen to spare us the gore.

Then...Vince announces a TV match, a title match no less, between Fred and Pedro. I couldn't sleep for a week. So come next Saturday night I adjust the rabbit ears on the little B&W in my bedroom and pull in the UHF station Canal 47 en espanol. Vinny Mac announces that our feature match this evening will be for the WWWF title between the Vampire and Pete. When we come back from the commercials advertising Arroz Carolina, El Show de Tommy, and every white kids masturbatory fantasy woman Iris Chacon, Pedro is standing in the ring with his obligatory red trunks and boots. Blassie is nowhere to be found. Pete is getting frustrated and so are the great unwashed at the Philadelphia Arena. Finally, Lou Albano leads Blassie out. But wait, WHAT THE FUCK!!!! Blassie is in street clothes, AND HE HAS A GODDAMN SLING ON HIS ARM!!!!!!!!!! Albano explains that Blassie injured his arm so badly he wouldn't be able to wrestle tonight. Boy is everyone pissed. I'm pissed, the crowd is pissed, the 10,000 people watching on TV are pissed, and most of all, Pedro is pissed. Pedro makes a fatal error in turning his back on Fred. Then, a miracle! Fred makes a sudden recovery. He rips off his sling and starts strangling Pete. Albano starts kicking the shit out of him too. Pedro is left in a heap in the middle of the ring. This sets off their MSG feud just fine but dammit we got rooked out of our TV match.

Those were the days I tell ya. Happy 100th birthday to the first wrestler who completely fascinated me.

Blassie's song "Pencil Neck Geek" was played quite often on the Dr. Demento radio show.

great great post - just before my time but oh how I wish we had some 1972 TV or arena footage - great year and Pedro had some larger-than-life heels to contend with

What's her deal... or should I say gimmick.

The more versions I hear of it the more I believe that "Gloria" should belong in the upper echelon of songs. I don't know, everybody manages to make it either good or at least memorable. Now where the hell do I have my 80s Italo Disco songs... *childhood nostalgia*

Freddie was on the cover of Black Belt once. No idea whether they tried to make a mockery of wrestling but nevertheless I like how biting people kinda makes it a legit martial art.
