I haven’t watched the winter Olympics since maybe ‘88, but just checking out some of the hot ass American women skiers.... worth checking out.  Wife turned on figure skating earlier but didn’t see anything worth looking at.

Sound is awful, but this thread reminded me of "The Office" being forced to add some Winter Olympics to their show by NBC.

I must admit to being a fan of all the drama of the figure skating competition, both Men's and Women's....can they make their jumps? what will the judges scores be?? My task is to just find when they show the events on CBC. The Canadian coverage is more in depth than the US, I think, and they tend to show events as they occur live. (I guess I could watch the stream online, but not at work!!).

No idea they were even on until I saw this post. Not getting much coverage in Philly.

The Eagles just won the Superbowl. If a meteor hit Philadelphia right now it wouldn't get any coverage either.

I am always a fan of the Olympics. I plan to watch at least a little of the prime time coverage each night and maybe some daytime coverage on the weekend if I'm not doing anything else. Minnesota is a winter sports hub with lots of locals on Team USA, notable Lindsey Vonn and numerous hockey players. So it's a big deal here in the media.

I do not know what happened, but it seems the Winter Olympics has lost some of it’s luster. I remember watching hours of it growing up, but now it does not even hardly spark any interest.

The last Olympic sports coverage that I watched was the US Dream Team (basketball) in the 1992 Summer Olympics. After that, I lost interest. However, I have watched some of the opening and closing ceremonies footage on YouTube - especially from the London Olympics.

Karate will be a sport in the 2020 Olympics. I am planning to watch it since I am a big fan of sport karate.

I'd watch it if I knew when it was on. Trouble with it being the wrong side of the world is the interesting stuff happens at 4am or whatever.

Anyway, there are plenty of hotties. E.g. Alena Zavarzina, snowboarder.

Thumbs up.

They even preempted Hockey Night In Canada on the CBC tonight.  Let's see, a masculine sport like hockey or some tea bagging ice prancers?  This is Canada under Justine Trudeau.  Cuckistan.

Ah yes, the sun drenched beaches of Estonia!  I just saw the pairs figure skating and the Korean couple consisted of an ethnic Korean girl from California and a friggin' white dude from Boston!  What a joke.  I can't believe the Koreans, notoriously insular and prejudiced, allowed that to happen.  What's the point in the Olympics if everyone jumps borders to train and/or compete?

There is a little girl there (16 yrs old) from Fremont California. Only 2 miles from my house. She is competing in figure skating. I'll watch that.

It seems like every year the prime time coverage on NBC gets worse. I was happy to hear that Bob Costas would be retiring, but they still fill the limited prime time coverage with stupid political stories and feel good stories instead of showing the actual events.

They will show the entire figure skating competition from start to finish and then show 2 minute snippets of 1 or 2 of the other events.

My wife makes fun of me because I scream at the TV, "show me the god damn events!"

I was in the States in summer 2016 overlapping with the Olympics. Your coverage was atrocious.

Over here we have pretty much everything covered. Using the red button on telly in those Games there were nine different sports going on live simultaneously. Lots of highlights packages and online content.

In the States almost the only thing I saw were the gaolbait gymnasts - because interviews with them were more important than things like the rowing finals or the triathlon or cycling or whatever.

Actually just watched the on demand version of the snowboarding finals, and it was pretty damn awesome. 17 year old kid from Colorado won the gold. Some drama at the end, and everyone else crashed and this kid nailed his last three jumps. Not bad for a half hour viewing.

I just can't get into a "sport" that relies on judges to determine winners and losers. So, ice skating, gymnastics, diving, and pretty much all of "Extreme" sports are non-starters for me.

I have trouble as well with this as well.

Last night during the men's skating, the American skater made it through his routine and did not fall. The Russian guy fell 2 times and was still 10 points ahead of the American. The Russian tried harder jumps, but fell on both attempts so he got more points for trying and failing a harder jump.

But that's boxing and MMA too.  Most fights go to a decision.

I don't follow either of those sports.  But if I did, at least you can point to the fact that without exception each and every fight can be decided in the ring and not at the scorer's table.

The attraction to those combat sports is that a knockout/conclusive finish is always possible in every bout, but yes boxing in particular is guilty of figure-skating-esque decisions once those bouts get to the judges.

Canada in 2nd place so far with 10 medals. Trying to watch coverage down here is horrible. Either you watch shit live at 2 am or it's all tape delayed. Listening to the announcers while watching Speed Skating this morning was quite amusing. THe American guy had no chance, but listening to them you'd think that being 3 seconds off the lead was the same as losing the race by 0.00001th of a second.

I play this silly game with both NBC and CBC while watching a "live" event. Toggling back and forth- my guess is that the US coverage is the one with the delay.

They should have delayed the women's snowboarding event until the winds died down, but that's just me being nitpicky.

Shaun White was ridiculously entertaining last night. I have to laugh how this was literally the first time my wife and I have EVER watched snowboarding and ten minutes in we think we're judging experts. "Yeah, the Japanese kid didn't hold on to the correct part of his board" "Oh, that Canadian was 60 degrees short on his 1440". Still we had a great time and this White kid (I don't approve of his racist name) seemed like a real good sportsman.

I did the same with my wife during the snowboarding. I did like that. The skiing was OK. I will never watch another second of figure skating for as long as I live. The men's hockey is what I am waiting for.

The coverage by NBC is just awful. They own so many stations and they pretty much have wasted the opportunity to be creative. Well, that's not true I guess. Other countries know how to do it. We would just be catching up.

Today was a good example of why NBC pisses me off. I always wake up early @ 5:30 am. So the 10000m Speedskaing final was occuring. NBC instead decides to show a preliminary Can vs Switzerland Hockey game. Only now...at 10:42 am...5 hrs later are they showing the Speedskating....long after I know the results.
Now while watching, the announcer just doesnt want the Canadian to win. It's like he's begging for the Dutchman to win, even as he's falling further behind.

Has Donald Trump said anything about the anti-Americanism of the NHL in refusing to allow American players to play at the Games?

Or is this part of the Russia collusion to ensure Putin's mates get an easier gold medal?

I'm not sure Trump is aware the Olympics are in progress. He has not uttered a word about it to my knowledge, not even offers of congratulations to medal winners or things like that.

These olympics sucked except for some of the snowboarding and the women's gold medal hockey game which never should have been allowed to end in a shoot out. The announcers have by and large sucked. The entire production has been a train wreck.

Well it kinda is, except you can throw the rock to move in a certain way based on the sweeping and the release from the thrower.
I've never been a fan of watching it and I have never tried it, but it's popularity here can't be questioned.

I think the importance of the Winter Olympics in the media depends on where you are. 1/3 of the women's hockey team members were either natives of Minnesota or played college hockey in the state. Lindsey Vonn grew up and started skiing in suburban Minneapolis. Her immediate and extended family still live here. There were Minnesotans on the curling team. I believe 1/3 of the USA's gold medals were won by people from or with ties to the state. The result is the local media treated the games like a big deal. Both newspapers had special pages or sections daily. The local NBC affiliate had reporters at the games and the CBS, ABC, and Fox affiliates covered the Olympics extensively despite having no broadcast rights. Even the general interest and sports talk radio hosts gave the games a lot of airtime. Naturally it was part of casual conversation among people. There was no way to avoid knowing about the Winter Olympics here and it was very much a big deal.
