El Tiante

Luis Tiant

One of the most unique wind-ups in MLB by turning his back to the batter.

Any memories about him?

The 1975 World Series is the first I remember.

And the Reds could not figure out Tiant to save their big red machine lives.

Your post prompted me to go look up his stats. I would have told you he was a journeyman guy and didnt do much besides the 1975 World Series. Looks like from 1973-1976 he was as good as you can get (largely forgotten and unheralded) -- 19 years n the mound. Wow. Wouldnt have guessed that.

I dont even remember him as a Yankee, Pirate or Angel.

The veterans' committee will likely put him in the HOF. Won 20 games 4 times. Nolan Ryan only won 20 games twice in his career.
Tiant had a 21-9 season. Next year his won-loss record was 9-20. You never knew what you were going to get with this guy.

The ESPN show about him returning to Cuba for the first time in over 50 years is must see TV.

I was at Game 1 of the 1975 World Series at Fenway where Looo-ie pitched a 6-0 shutout. He also had two hits and scored a run from second base which was funny as hell, everyone laughing AND he was smoking his cigar in the on deck circle late in the game

Mark Frost has a great book called Game Six which provides a pitch by pitch review of the game while going through each major player and managers backgrounds and history. Tiant was very interesting. His parents were stuck in Cuba and he hadn't seem them since the revolution. They got them out for the Series.

I think I read that before. Is that an older book?
