I remember Elvis' death the most vividly, but I am sure there are other stories I could recall if I thought about it. I was 8 when he died, and I know I have memories from well before that. News-wise that's the one I remember best, probably because my birthday was three days later.

I vaguely remember Reagan getting shot, but I vividly remember watching the Challenger blow up live. We were all in the A/V Room at school watching.

For me it was the Bicentennial hoopla during the summer of 1976, when I was five. I remember watching Carter's inauguration the following January but I was really into the election of 1980. And, although this is hardly the first news story I remember, the Mount St. Helens eruption in May, 1980 was something that really fascinated me. From watching the news in the weeks prior to the major eruption, to watching a 20/20 episode about it after the mountain exploded (I remember watching that after getting home from a late Little League game), to seeing trace amounts of ash fall outside my third grade class window.

It was Anwar Sadat's visit to Israel in November of 1977. He arrived there on a Saturday morning and as a result ABC, CBS, and NBC wiped out nearly all of their cartoon lineups. My mom tried to explain what a big event this was, but I was upset and not interested in hearing such explanations of global politics.

I was playing Atari (already out dated at the time IIRC) at my uncle and aunts as they and my parents watched Baby Jessica be saved on TV.

There were probably others before then, but the biggest news I could remember was when I was 10 and my entire classroom witnessed the Challenger explosion live on TV. I mean, when it happened, everyone's jaws dropped, and girls in my class started crying. Last edited on Sun May 13th, 2018 01:58 pm by Dr. Strangelove |
