For me it's the Nixon impeachment. I don't think I really understood that one until Gerald Ford took over.

The death of Terry Fox in 1981. I was five years old. Big news in Canada, made even more poignant in my home because my mom was a cancer survivor and she was really rooting for Terry.

Reagan getting shot. I was waiting for a Bugs Bunny Easter special to air and it never did because of the news coverage. It was the first time a politician screwed me over.

I really don't remember the Kennedy assassination but I clearly remember watching the Beatles on Ed Sullivan only 3 months later. I remember the nightly news reports with that days casualty reports from Vietnam. The 1968 Presidential election stands out to me because we ran mock elections in our 5th grade class to learn about it. I vividly remember the moon landing. Not a truly major news story but I remember the Jets beating the Colts in Superbowl III and I remember every little thing about the 1969 Miracle Mets season.

Maris hits 61. If a sports story doesn't count as "major",  then the Cuban missile crisis.

I remember Elvis' death the most vividly, but I am sure there are other stories I could recall if I thought about it. I was 8 when he died, and I know I have memories from well before that.

News-wise that's the one I remember best, probably because my birthday was three days later.

I vaguely remember Reagan getting shot, but I vividly remember watching the Challenger blow up live. We were all in the A/V Room at school watching.

For me it was the Bicentennial hoopla during the summer of 1976, when I was five. I remember watching Carter's inauguration the following January but I was really into the election of 1980. And, although this is hardly the first news story I remember, the Mount St. Helens eruption in May, 1980 was something that really fascinated me. From watching the news in the weeks prior to the major eruption, to watching a 20/20 episode about it after the mountain exploded (I remember watching that after getting home from a late Little League game), to seeing trace amounts of ash fall outside my third grade class window.

It was Anwar Sadat's visit to Israel in November of 1977. He arrived there on a Saturday morning and as a result ABC, CBS, and NBC wiped out nearly all of their cartoon lineups. My mom tried to explain what a big event this was, but I was upset and not interested in hearing such explanations of global politics.

I was playing Atari (already out dated at the time IIRC) at my uncle and aunts as they and my parents watched Baby Jessica be saved on TV.

There were probably others before then, but the biggest news I could remember was when I was 10 and my entire classroom witnessed the Challenger explosion live on TV.
I mean, when it happened, everyone's jaws dropped, and girls in my class started crying.

This was the first big thing I remember as well. The panic was unreal. After this probably the Challenger explosion.

I have a vivid memory of this one even though it isn't my first memory. It was all over the news while it was happening.

Hogan beating Andre duh.

First big mainstream news story I remember of my life was probably the 1988 presidential election.

The 1989 earthquake came to mind quickly as well.

A bit confused on this one.  I remember it vividly as well, but I don't think this happened in 1981.  I remember being much older.

I remember Elvis dying but I was only 6 at the time and it really bothered me because he had the same birthday as my mom only a year older and when he died I thought my mom was going to die the next year.

The one that I really remember vividly was the gas shortage in 1979. I couldn't believe the lines for gas, and when we got hit with Sandy a few years ago and the lines came back it really reminded me of when I was a kid...only when Sandy hit, the people were much bigger assholes than they were in 1979. Back then, I don't remember any arguments or fistfights, just people waiting in line. Also back then I don't remember people filling their cars plus at least 20 gallons worth of little red cans, but that was happening during Sandy.

I remember it as well and it seemed to go on for ages.  When you think the Chileans were able to get 33 miners back all safe and sound from a harder situation, it says a lot about Italian competence.  I think one rescue attempt managed to shove him further down.

I should've just read the story.  This isn't about Baby Jessica, this is an Italian boy.  Baby Jessica happened in America maybe 5 or 6 years later.  I do vaguely recall that for a time, there were lots of kids falling down wells when no kid had every fallen down a well before or since.  But Baby Jessica was the really famous one.

The JFK assassination. I was 4 and at my grandparents house in PA for Thanksgiving. I was watching TV when they interrupted for the news. I had no idea what was going on so I asked my grandmother. She wouldn't really tell me the details, only that something had happened then sent me to the bedroom to play!

Beatles on Ed Sullivan is one of my earliest memories. The Apollo disaster where NASA lost 3 astronauts (Grissom White and Chaffe) in a horrible fire during pre-launch preparations is still vivid.

As a kid I only knew the names Grissom, White and Chaffe because of the artificial oil islands in Long Beach named after them.
