Was the Weaslesuit guy the one who exchange humor with Rose on the message boards? So, weaslesuit was a young poster at the time? Interesting.

I listened to the whole George Schire interview and I was surprised by the accolades and compliments he bestowed upon Bruno and his career.

Weas is my age so he wasn't that young. I don't remember him in exchanges with Rose specifically but thats a long time ago now.

Somebody once said that Torch was a good bridge from the newsstand magazines to newsletters. People who read the magazines would find Torch much more accessible than Meltzer with his lack of graphics, emphasis on Japanese wrestling and deeper history.

That's a pretty fair assessment. When I subscribed to the Torch, its formatting and layout were superior to the Observer and probably still are. The Japanese news was rather basic. Mexican wrestling barely got touched on. UFC was considered outside the scope of the publication although I think now it gets coverage. It was an easier read with its emphasis at the time on the WWF, WCW, ECW, and tidbits from elsewhere. The trade off was the Observer was far more informative, in depth, and analytical. I also must admit that Bruce Mitchell's Torch pieces were never my cup of tea and they took a lot of space.

Re: Wade Keller

I wrote ECW Arena reviews for him at a time he had nobody doing them. He had a certain template he wanted you to use so you didn't make a grammar mess but otherwise was fun to do. Didn't like doing the reviews to be honest because I wanted to enjoy the shows and to do the reviews correctly you had to really tune in and pay attention to everything.

Was a subscriber and had a scenario where I had a house fire and 'lost everything'.

Contacted him once I had life sorted out and wanted to start a new subscription at my new address.

I received back issues (everything I had missed) and he threw on a year subscription (for free) just stuff he didn't have to do and certainly more than one would expect from a 'news sheet writer'

Beej, can you elaborate a bit more about the template for reviews? What was he looking for and what did he not want? How did use of the format cut down on grammatical errors? Word and similar programs have spelling and grammar checks, but if someone is poor at those things, not to mention usage, how would a certain template prevent errors?

An example

Tag team match

He wanted it written as Sabu & RVD or The Sandman & Tommy Dreamer as opposed to  using the word 'and' because he felt that the & symbol established who the teams were. Very specific about that.

Someone somewhere must have turned something in that said that Sabu and The Sandman brawled outside the ring and Dreamer and RVD brawled inside the ring and you couldn't tell what was what or who was what.

Also this was 20+ years ago. Maybe only half the world with a computer then.

I just took it as his personal attention to detail and how he wanted it done.

That's very interesting because I set up my results research the same way. For example, I never used nicknames. Instead of putting Professor Toru Tanaka I would just put Toru Tanaka. Superstar Billy Graham was just Billy Graham etc. I would also never use "The" with the sole exception of The Sheik. So The Preacher was just Preacher, The Medics were just Medics. I did this because I would always know when someone stole my results or not due to the strict template I followed.

Wade used to have a call-in number where you could call and leave a voicemail after a pay per view (this would have been 1994/1995 era). Then, he would print your comments in the following issue. Very fun times. I remember when he first got email, and I had a back and forth dialogue with him about some of the online services.

I subscribed to the Torch for years, until I lost interest in current product around the year 2000. I liked Wade and the newsletter. Though recently I subscribed to get the archvies online, and realized that Bruce Mitchell wasn't my cup of tea either in hindsight.

To branch off of the main topic, does anyone else subscribe to the F4W or did so in the past? I really enjoyed the print version, but have largely lost interest in it now that Bryan Alvarez has ceded the duties of writing to others. He devotes himself now to the multitude of podcasts on that site as well as some outside gigs (jiu-jitsu instructor, gymnastics coach, he still wrestles some indy matches) and he and his wife have a small child that naturally takes a lot of the time he once devoted to writing. I think he'd have ended the print version entirely a while ago if not for there being readers who wanted it and people who wanted to carry on with it in his place.

The podcasts he hosts are generally really good, the best being those he and his buddy Vincent Verhei host together. They've been friends since high school and rip on one another in a way only people who've known each other that long can. The shows aren't for everyone. Bryan is very opinionated and swears a lot which I find hilarious but others might find as overkill, but they entertain me. He and Vince right now are watching World Championship Wrestling in order on WWE Network and then discuss the episodes in depth. They're up to early 1988 now, but the back episodes are available on f4wonline.com.
