https://abcnews.go.com/US/proposal-split-california-states-makes-november-ballot/story?id=55855441 Could this really happen? Just think of the senate seats, and what about the tax base concentrated in "California"? Last edited on Wed Jun 13th, 2018 01:43 pm by chrob61 |

I feel like they've been talking about this for 50 years. I doubt it will ever happen, but it's a huge state with many different interests. I've driven most of it. Clearly there is no relation between L.A. and San Fran and the rest of the state. Most of northern California might as well be Mississippi and a good deal of southern California outside of the wealthy areas might as well be Mexico.

There have been a few different proposals by a few different groups to do this strategically. As far as I have read this one basically splits the state up in such a way to still marginalize conservatives and basically create four new Democrat senators.

My take on this is a little different- isn't the area with the vast majority of Democrats in the general Hollywood area? And the wealth as well. Not knowing California politics, my guess would be there would end up with 2 Democratic Senators, but 4 Republicans.

It looks like they're splitting it in a way to always make sure that they get the Democrats. L.A. and San Francisco are the major cities so Dems will win those 2 states and likely the new Southern California too. There will never be a proposal that isn't 100% political and gerrymandered to hell by one side or the other.

This is just wishful thinking, surely? Like splitting New York City from New York State, or most of DC rejoining Maryland?

People have wanted to have South Jersey separate then North Jersey for years. Never will happen though.

If they passed the law the way they have that map drawn it would be nuts because you would have thousands upon thousands of people commuting from the new Southern California to the new California for work daily. I’d be curious to see the tax implications of that.

Franchise wrote: In that case how are you taxed? It probably varies state to state but for the NY-NJ situation, you pay 100% of your income tax in NY and your employer withholds NY taxes. NJ then gives you a credit for the amount already paid in NY, but you wind up paying at least a little something to them too because the credit rarely seems to cover it. You're still of course paying your local taxes for where you reside and that will go to NJ instead of NY. You're better off on that end because if you live in NY, you pay state, city, AND local taxes, and NJ should only have state and city taxes. The bottom line is, you're getting fucking taxed out the ass no matter what so don't worry about it. Thats probably why I’ll never leave Texas, no state income tax is amazing after living in California all those years.
