Thunder parted ways with the announcer who said Russell Westbrook was “out of his cotton-picking mind"

Brian Davis is out in Oklahoma City just over two months after making a controversial comment about superstar guard Russell Westbrook.

The Thunder announced on Friday that Davis, their longtime play-by-play announcer, will not be having his contract renewed for the 2018-19 season, per Royce Young of ESPN.

This annoys me in so many different ways. I’m being careful to hold my tongue here but the reality of this is that racism only exists because young “people of color” that have never experienced it just won’t let it die.

Geezus almighty. It's an older term that you might here on Andy Griffith or something, but seriously?

Amazing he would be in less trouble if he had said "Out of his fucking mind". That term has been around forever and it could easily slip out if someone is trying NOT to cuss, for tv or radio or whatever.

Damn shame. I doubt he meant anything by it.

This is why I swear at coworkers and patients in French. No one down here is smart enough to know that I"m insulting them.

Good point. I did the same thing as a kid with English. Made me think what a swear word even is if people have to understand it for it to exist

A total overreaction. I use that term myself. My grandmother, a black woman used that term endlessly. Just incredible.

I've never thought of cotton pickin' as having racial overtones. This seems a little extreme.

I still cannot believe the guy was fired over this. The term is so commonly used that it doesn't mean anything other than a guy must be nuts. I just don't get it.

Russell Westbrook could've diffused the situation. Instead, he said this, "Brian's been here for a while, I know him personally, but obviously what he said wasn't OK. We all understand that."

Westbrook is an asshole as a person. A great player but a shit heel to deal with.

I've never thought of that term having racial overtones. A huge segment of the South - White AND Black - made a (somewhat meager) living picking cotton.

Don't get me wrong, "Cotton Picker" can be used as a derogatory term - as in "You're just a dumb ol' cotton picker". But I've heard it used by whites on whites more than anyone else.

There was a scene in Barney Miller where the detectives didn't want to go on a call with Fish so Wojo suggested they do "eeny meeny miny mo".  There was a pause and then Harris said, "so, I guess it'll be me."

Thankfully yes. Those after us won't.

I had a guy who worked for me for a few years who was Malayan. He knew everything about the security risks of computers. He actually showed my wife how her Myspace (dating myself here) could be corrupted by corrupting it himself. Anyway, he was funny as Hell. We had to meet at a prospect's office who was only 10 minutes from where our office was (rare) and I needed to bring him.

We had to take separate cars for some reason. I said, "see you in 10 minutes". His response was "I am Asian. Better make it 15". LMAO.

On the other side, I had someone come to me and complain about a joke someone else told at the expense of the Irish. The lady complaining was of Italian descent and the guy who told the joke (the oldest one about the Irish) was clearly Irish. I asked her what the big deal was and she lectured me for 20 minutes. I was actually surprised she didn't find a reason to sue when she quit.
