After Crush couldn't do it, they had Savage (off the juice at this point) as the last participant? Did anyone think he had a snowball's chance? :)

Re-watching this, I forgot about that little bit where Luger shoves Heenan on the way to the ring. That was a nice touch.

Luger knocks Yokozuna silly with the 'six inch plate' in his forearm and then not the cleanest slam.

Is it too late for Yokozuna and Mr Fuji to file a protest?

Luger's push was a bomb.

At first, I thought they had Lex targeted for a title run. He just sort of flamed out.

It would of worked but the fans wanted Bret as champion. Also I think the All American gimmick hurt him a lot also. It was it the 80's anymore. They should of learn that after Mania VII.
Lex should at least won the title at SS for a short time losing it on Raw (unheard of at the time) or the SS in Nov. But they did the dumb finish of Count out and acting like he just won the title.

He was scheduled to win the belt and then there’s the now famous story about how he got drunk at a bar on Saturday night and told anyone who would listen that he was winning. On Sunday morning it was in the Daily News. I read it myself. So did Vince. And that was the end of the title for Luger.

Vince had changed his mind about Luger well before that. Even if he did win the title Bret was still walking out with the belt at the end of the night.
As for the story, did he actually break kayfabe and say he was BOOKED to win? Or did he just say he was going to win because there's a big difference.

If they were going to put the title on him it had to be summerslam by royal rumble he had cooled. Not winning the title at summerslam made him seem like a failure to me as a 14 year old at the time; I wasn’t smart to the business but I knew it wasn’t real. If they really thought Luger had the goods they would have given it to him.

The WWF wasn’t a chase company like JCP/WCW.

I think the all American thing was fine in the short term but he should have transitioned to a regular non patriotic face after summerslam or survivor series at the latest. The other foreigners at the time were weak; borga from Finland, the quebecers from Canada and crush from Hawaii?? Who was a patriotic face supposed to battle? Hogan pulled it off in the 80’s because they had Russians, an Iranian and a French giant. when that was gone he could battle the evils of bad friends, monsters and money. Not to mention overseas tours not caring about an all American in Luger. Duggan carried the flag and was goofy as hell but he had way more charisma and had a edge at times that Luger never did.

I’m glad he didn’t win the title at X I was a bret fan at the time and would have been pissed if Luger left with the belt.

He definitely broke kayfabe, at least the way the News reported it.
