We have used Walmart's grocery service where you submit your grocery list online and they pick it for you and then you go to Walmart and they load it into your car. It worked like a charm. I was in and out of the Walmart parking lot in about 5 minutes. They even did a good job picking the fresh produce and the fresh meats. No complaints. They even upsize your item for free if the size item you order is out of stock (for example, if you order an 18 oz box of Cheerios and they are out of it, you get a 36 oz box of Cheerios for the price of the 18 oz box).

The only negatives with the service are:
1) Few Walmarts have this service (the closest one to me is about 20 mins away)
2) Same day service isn't available. You have to put your order in several days in advance.

what irritates me about the Wal-Mart self checkout lanes is they only have half of the damn things working a any given time (sort of like the human lanes) and half of them only take cash or only take cards and you dont know which until you get to it

Wal-mart has a robot in 50 stores to check for outs aisle by aisle. And last week they announced they were testing drones that would take customers to their items instead of needing humans.

And those damn bags!

I just bitched to a worker about this yesterday.

The worker came over and separated a few bags because I got into a check-out station where no bags were separated and they were all stacked together.

Your supermarkets still have free bags? Old school.

You have to pay for them in California

I could be wrong so feel free to correct me but aren’t some of the large grocery store chains union nationwide or at least in some states? I know they were in California like 15 years ago. I wonder how much they can control the installation of the self check out lanes.

I don't think they have any say in whether the store can add self check out lines. The Unions just gotta make sure the employee get their hours.

I imagine the unions probably have a say to a point. It wouldn’t be a union if they weren’t “working” for the employee. I don’t have a dog in the fight and I’m not a union person but I would think their is some negotiation or trade off.

I could be wrong though

I know that Wegman's is not unionized. Not in the stores at least. I do believe there is a union in the distribution centers though.

I am sure Wegman's isn't perfect but I know they do make attempts to treat their employees well. One of the big wigs with the local UFCW lives near me and says that they have not been able to break through for various reasons but one being that they are not complete assholes. Contrary to other markets where the management philosophy is taken out of the Attila the hun handbook.
