Why do some players opt-out of this challenge? Is it because of a money/contract thing, or are they worried about injuries?

I suspect that some players opt out for fear of messing up their swing for the second half of the season. If you google "home run derby second half curse" you will find a number of articles on the topic. Many of the past Home Run Derby hitters seemed to struggle for a week or so after the contest. While most of them worked their way back to their pre-derby form, some never seemed to get their old swing back.

Bobby Abreu was NEVER the same hitter after HR Derby.

It's a shame that so many stars don't really want to do anything relating to the All-Star festivities, but there's so much money at stake now and so much pressure from their teams not to get hurt or screw up their swings. Baseball is the least physical of the sports where you can have a real All-Star Game, but still most people seem like they don't want to play anymore. And this is a sad field for Home Run Derby, devoid of any star power other than Bryce Harper (who's overrated). These are clearly not the top sluggers in baseball.  At least Jesus Aguilar leads the NL in homers, even if no one could pick him out of a lineup.
