In the never-ending world that we now live in where everything sounds like an Onion article but isn't, the Academy sent out a letter yesterday announcing several changes, the most significant of which is instituting awards for "Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film".

This is basically an admission that no one watches the crap that is often nominated, so in addition to that they're going to just have an hour of the MTV Movie Awards go on before the "real" Oscars.

It's really amazing that they're doing this.  This comes at a time when the Oscars is being criticized on all sides and is having record low ratings.  Mark my words, they're going to "solve" the problem of being too stodgy for conservatives and too white for liberals by handing "Black Panther" and its entire cast a boatload of awards.  That's 100% the reason behind this.  I will bet my entire bank account right now that "Black Panther" wins.  You heard it here first!

Of course, in reality no one is going to watch this shit and it's going to alienate the few remaining 80-year old liberal elites who currently watch.  This could legitimately be the end of the Oscars as something that is actually talked about with any sense of importance at all.  No one talks about the People's Choice Awards or a million other similar shows, and this is where we're heading now with the Oscars.

The Oscars have an international cachet though. The People's Choice Awards are unknown outside the States and apparently within as well.

Plus there is still something to be said for "Oscar-winning" as a marketing tool. Nobody does that with e.g. the Grammys.

There HAS been something to be said for being "Oscar-winning", but that is diminishing.  Every year little-known movies get the "Oscar pop", but this requires a wide audience that is rapidly declining.  And if the latest summer blockbuster can also claim to be "Oscar-winning", then the little indy film that also won gets lost in the shuffle anyway and it doesn't carry as much weight.  It's not going to change completely over night, but as the Oscars continue to be more popular and youthful and politically correct, they're going to lose what made them relevant, and they're never going to actually win over the young, hip, social media savvy, socially conscious crowd to really care as much as their grandparents did.  Those people aren't watching broadcast TV on a Sunday night for 4 hours and sitting through "Best Cinematographer".  Most of them aren't even going to movies, period.
