The tournament will air weekly on the WWE Network (as opposed to last year, which was released via VOD for viewers to binge-watch) starting 9/5.  The initial four episodes will comprise the opening round.  Based on last night's taping, the episodes will feature the following:

*Tegan Nox vs. Zatara.
- MJ Jenkins vs. Rhea Ripley.
- Lacey Lane vs. Vanessa Kraven.
- Killer Kelly vs. Meiko Satomura.

9/12 Episode 2:

*Deonna Purazzo vs. Priscilla Kelly.
*Aerial Monroe vs. Zeuxis.
*Kacy Catanzaro vs. Reina Gonzalez.
*Ashley (Madison) Rayne vs. Mercedes Martinez.

9/19 Episode 3:

*Kaitlyn vs. Kavita Devi.
*Toni Storm def. Jinny.
*Xia Li vs. Karen Q.
*Alysin Kay (Sienna) vs. Mia Yim.

9/26 Episode 4:

*Hiroyo Matsumoto vs. Rachel Evers.
*Taynara Conti vs. Jessie Elaban.
*Isla Dawn vs. Nicole Matthews.
*Io Shirai vs. Xia Brookside.

The announcing team for the Mae Young Classic tournament will be Michael Cole, Renee Young and Beth Phoenix, replacing last year's team of Jim Ross and Lita.

Mauro Ranallo will be hosting Braketology segments of the tournament, including a special breaking down the tournament competitors.

I've never heard of 98% of these women.

Vanessa Kraven has been around NXT and might have done last year's Mae Young Classic.

Deonna Purazzo has done NXT, ROH, and Impact extensively and was just signed, so expect her to do well.

Madison Rayne of course is the biggest American name from her years in Impact.

Mercedes Martinez is a long, long, long time indy standout from SHIMMER and all the other women's indy companies and was in the Mae Young Classic last year.

Kaitlyn is the former WWE Diva from years ago (and A.J. Lee's best friend) making her comeback.

Toni Storm is part of NXT UK and was in last year's Classic.

Karen Q was in ROH's women's title tournament earlier this year.

Alysin Kay is Impact's Sienna and a 2-time Impact and 1-time GFW Women's champ.

Mia Yim is also from Impact and ROH and I think did last year's Mae Young Classic.

Rachel Evers is Paul Ellering's daughter who has done some NXT jobs before.

Nicole Matthews is another indy standout from SHIMMER and the like.

Io Shirai and Hiroyo Matsumoto are the tournament favorites from STARDOM, and Shirai in particular is noted as one of the best female workers in the world.

Don't know the others.

My prediction is that Toni Storm gets the big push for synergy with NXT UK and beats Io Shirai in the finals.  It helps that Storm is beautiful in addition to being able to work.  Just a guess, I have read zero spoilers.

I think Kacy Catanzaro is going to go far in this tournament - she's the chick that was kicking ass on American Ninja Warrior and she has a huge mainstream following. I have no idea if she can wrestle, but I doubt HHH would expose her in this tournament to job out in a minute or two when they signed her 100% because of her name and reputation.

Reports that Tegan Knox has been seriously injured during the tournament while attempting a suicide dive. She apparently hurt her knee or leg and the ref flashed the "X" and trainers came out to look at it. She begged them to let her continue and actually talked them into re-starting the match. But after a minute or two she couldn't go on and the ref stopped it. Curious that they never went for an improvised finish even after the re-start.  It will be interesting to see how/if they edit that together for TV. I'm not sure if she was supposed to win the match or not, but I can imagine her frustration getting hurt during her big opportunity. She was supposedly very upset.

Broken leg, apparently. Shame, she's cute.

Particularly bad luck as she missed the last one through injury.

Her wiki page says she is 5’ tall isn’t that almost too short to hit the top rope? Is she going to hit the middle rope like the midgets errr short stature wrestlers? Or is she going to have a gimmick like Johnny valentine and just not hit the ropes?

My money is on Meiko Satumura and Io Shirai. Saw a few matches between them from Japan and I thought they were gonna kill each other.

Your fun Meiko Satomura fact is that she wrestled on Monday Nitro 21 years ago. In the women's cruiserweight tournament.

Interesting that they brought in Madison Rayne to much fanfare just to have her lose in the first round.  This might be understandable if they wanted to give a young competitor the rub with an upset win, like Kacy Catanzaro, but she jobbed to another veteran in Mercedes Martinez who didn't need it.  A bit weird.  Also interesting that in her video package they showed still photos of her with "Impact" plastered everywhere, but the commentary never mentioned that she worked there, only that she was very well known and a former women's champ.  They also mentioned her husband "Josh" without ever saying who he was, despite the fact that he worked for WWE for years before going to Impact.

Catanzaro looked good in her first televised match though and upset Reina Gonzalez, who was a foot taller.  Catanzaro reminds me a little of a more athletic A.J. Lee.  Hopefully they job her out in the next round though because she needs a lot more experience and there's no reason to push her at the expense of so many other women at this point.  She'll need a lot of time in NXT.

Yeah, I thought Kacy hit some cool acrobatic moves in her match. Also agree with you that she'll lose in Round Two.

Aerial Monroe seemed to have loads of charisma and the fans got behind her. She's someone they should definitely bring back. Zeuxis looked a little sloppy and I was slightly surprised that she beat Monroe.

That was the worst match of the tournament so far. I thought they were both off, but I was also surprised Zeuxis won. I thought it was unnecessary to show Monroe’s daughter crying after she lost.

That was strange, seeing as this was a taped show.

This tournament has been much like last year so far, with the opening round matches being poor to average with a decent main event for each show. To be expected since they are again using rookies in the opening round. I fully expect the tournament to pick up starting with the next round, as it did last year.

Okay, I wanted to like Renee Young on commentary (I don't watch Raw, so she may be fantastic there) but she needs to learn what the big words mean before she uses them.

"at this conjecture"
"trained under the guise of"

It's like watching The Sopranos. Unless this is her gimmick, because I never noticed it before, then I'm fine with it.

I've never really noticed that from Renee.  Unless there are a lot of other examples you can cite, I'm going to chalk this up to her being a little nervous and trying to get her stuff in without thinking it through (which is what she's struggling the most with in these horrible 3-man booths).  She's always come across as well-spoken to me.  Compared to Booker T., she's a Rhodes Scholar.

So far it's been better looking women, worse commentary.
Actually, I'll walk back the second part - Cole has been far better than Ross last year.  Lita at her best last year was better than Phoenix and Young have been so far by a hair.
I know they'd never do it (gotta ensure smiles go on faces) but I wanna see a honest to goodness heel win one of these tournaments one year.  Take the trophy, call out whomever's holding a belt and go right to town on them.

I could make a drinking game out of "Girl hits her finisher then shows a big look of shock when the other girl kicks out at 2" 14 of the 16 first round matches had that spot. Just once in this tournament I'd like to see someone go right back on the offense after someone kicks out of their big move. I'd also like to see a sore loser or 2 in these things and attack the winner after a match.

Better action now that most of the scrubs were taken out in round 1.

Well we'd better hope she majored in Cody and not Dusty because if it's the latter we will never see her improve on her vocabulary.  Unless of course she drops a "clubberin" in which case she would pop me.

Renee as a female Dusty would be perversely entertaining. They'd have to bring back the claw though when they do instant replays.

The Tegan Nox match finally aired last night.  The injury came on the very first move of the match.  She definitely has balls.  I can't believe she convinced the trainer to let the match continue when she could barely stand.  I guess they care more about head injuries than leg injuries, but in 2018 I never thought that would still happen.  They went another couple of minutes and then Nox actually ran the ropes and got nailed with a dropkick and that's when she started screaming in pain and threw up the X herself.  They showed all of it unedited and it was some powerful TV.

Rhea Ripley was phenomenal in keeping her cool and continuing to sneer at Nox through all this.  Some great facial expression to show that she didn't give a shit if someone was hurt, she was just glad to advance.  She really did a great job in making sure the whole match didn't fall apart.  I think they said she was 21 and she did a better job than a lot of veterans in keeping it together and never breaking character.

Just watched the semi finals and so far the one who has impressed me most was Meiko Satomura, whom I've never really seen before. I really hope the WWE signs her, she impressed the hell out of me in her matches

Certainly I should win something for predicting the finals.  The odds of me getting this right were pretty slim.
