A California man is facing 10 felony counts for allegedly sneaking out on dates just before the waiter brings the check, authorities said Monday.

Paul Guadalupe Gonzalez, 45, set up dates across southern California and would enjoy the meals before he'd disappear, the L.A. County District Attorney said, according to a news release.

“Eight women purportedly ended up paying the bill themselves, one in the belief that the defendant was going to pay her back, while in two other instances the restaurants picked up the check,” the prosecutor said in a statement.

ABC News reported that it tried repeatedly to contact Gonzales, but could not reach him. It is unclear if he has a lawyer.

He was reportedly taken into custody on Saturday. If convicted, he faces up to 13 years in state prison, KTLA.com reported. He pleaded not guilty to extortion, grand theft and other charges. Gonzales is accused of defrauding the women of nearly $1,000.

CBS Los Angeles spoke to an alleged victim. She said he was “good looking” and she thought: Why did he choose me?

“He ordered a salad with shrimp, a filet mignon, yes, he went all out” she told the station.

“All of a sudden he’s all, oh, my phone’s dying and I’m waiting on the call from my mom about my aunt. I’m going to go to the car to get my charger and then my first comment to him when he got up was oh what, you’re not coming back?”

She was stuck with the $130 bill, she said.

“I didn’t mention it to the restaurant, nothing. I think I was more embarrassed, my pride was just like, you know, I felt dumb.”

This guy will do hard time but the cop who murdered an innocent man in his own home will get a paid vacation. This is America.

Stupid question.

Lets take color out of this. Lets say it was a woman 'guilty' of this. Would we be talking about felonies and jailtime.

I want equality.

He's not getting felonies or jail time either. He'll plea it down to something else or agree to pay the money back and that'll be it.

They have to pile the charges on to make paying back the original money sound like the good option.

There's a way to get plastic straws involved. Once that hits, the death penalty awaits.

If one person stays at the table, how has a crime been committed? Even if she was u under the impression that he would pay? Even if he said he would pay, surely that isn't a binding verbal contract.

That's what I was thinking.  Running out on a date isn't "dine and dash".  Someone still paid and no crime was committed.  The dates could each take him to small claims court maybe to try to make the case that they should be reimbursed, but I don't see how they'd have a case and it wouldn't be worth the time.  It's 8 women at less than $1,000 total.  That means less than $125 per date, half of which was their responsibility since the man should not be obligated to pay for her.  So at most he owes 8 women about $60 each.  And this is news and "grand theft".  This is absurd. I mean the guy's a mental case for repeatedly doing this to get a few free meals, but that's a different story.

The guy is a scammer. He's not that much different than those people who call claiming to be from the IRS saying you need to pay X amount of dollars or you'll go to jail. Or any other phone,  email, or internet scam for that matter that people stupidly fall for and give up their money. It's basically the same principle. He's a thief in that he's stealing expensive meals from these chicks by ditching them when the bill comes and they're out several hundred dollars. He deceived them in that they were led to believe he was paying or at the very least they were splitting the check. So yes, in that sense they were defrauded and he committed a crime. In two cases the restaurant picked up the tab because they felt sorry for the women. This particular article also doesn't mention that in a separate instance the guy allegedly received services at a hair salon and walked out on paying the bill there too.

I know women get men to pay for shit all the time, but how were they in on the scam when they believed they were on a legitimate date where they presumably though this guy was going to pay for a nice meal but instead leaves them high and dry and sticks them with a $100 plus check (one bill was supposedly $250)?

District Attorneys in all 50 States overcharge the Hell out of people in order to get them to agree to plea down to bullshit misdemeanor charges, very common practice.

The perp pleas down and gets probation and pays fines, the D.A. can boast of a high conviction rate, and most important of all, the State can collect big bucks off of fines and probation fees that the perp has to pay monthly.

Everybody wins.
