Trump is calling it USMCA which is comically stupid but the deal is better for the U.S.  It is pretty much the only thing I agree with him on - we have been getting ripped off for decades by everyone.  This shows that it is not impossible to strike a deal that is more favorable to the U.S.  So, even though I will criticize him on every other thread, I will not on this one.  Definitely a positive.

What are the highlights of the deal?

Still issues to be resolved but the U.S. can export a greater percentage of diary to the Canada. Seems like a minor issue but it is not. Farmers have been complaining about it forever. It also loosens up tariffs a lot, increases the levels at which duty can be charged on Americans leaving Mexico and Canada. Importantly, it makes it much easier for oil and gas to prove that they are in compliance in regards to importing from Canada and Mexico. It sounds minor but apparently it was costing U.S. firms a ton of money to try and comply with the regs which were onerous.

On the wage front, this deal should help with U.S. job creation. There is now a requirement that factories pay workers $16 an hour (not actually a requirement but there are penalties involved for not doing so). This will obviously help the U.S. and Canada and probably hurt Mexico a bit.

There is a lot more to it and not every dispute was resolved yet but this is clearly a better deal for the U.S.

Honestly, it is a better deal in that the U.S. had nowhere to go but up. Both Canada and Mexico also had "wins" which were basically some things were kept, like dispute resolution, exactly or close to what they were before.

There are a lot more details out there today on this. A better deal for the U.S. to be certain. Some in Canada and Mexico feel screwed but that is because the previous deal was slanted so far in their favor. This is still a fair deal for them overall and the reality is they had no choice. I think Trump thinks he can handle China the same way. I doubt this although it is very clear that changes need to be made there as well. The Chinese are different. They play a long game and don't have to worry about elections like they do in Canada and Mexico.

Ross Perot must be proud that Trump is fighting the "big sucking sound" of US jobs being exported to Mexico. Hard to believe that it has been 26 years since NAFTA was introduced (big topic of the 1992 presidential debates)

I've read up on this from various sources and it seems marginally better for us.  I don't see it as the HUGE win that Trump in typical fashion is touting, and I don't get the opposition to it at all (other than the fact that liberals must shake their fists at all things Trump).

Typical of the U.S. though. It's only a good deal when the U. S. Is doing the ass raping.
As soon as punk Trump is assassinated parts of the deal(.what a joke will be renegotiated.).

Well it's a different deal so I'm not sure why the name would stay the same.  We're just lucky he didn't call it the Trump's Best Deal Ever And Everyone Knows It Agreement (TBDEAEKIA rolls off the tongue).

Completely agree that Trump is a pompous asshole. Still think this is a better deal in ways that are more impactful than it appears at first glance. The wage and diary issues are the highlights.

Trump is still an asshole but this is low hanging fruit.

Yeah, he's pompous, but he gets the job done. You know this is better for America when Schumer is raving about it.

A lot of Dems like it because of the wage requirement. Well, they are calling it a requirement but it isn't really. The key is that Mexico will have to pay penalties if there workers in certain trade heavy industries don't pay $15 an hour. Down there, that represents a significant increase for many workers. We will see how enforcement goes and if there are numerous loopholes. Hard to tell but on the face of it, that is a win for the U.S. and Canada.
