They’re teaching my 5th grader that Columbus was an asshole to his crew, didn’t discover shit, and was a selfish prick. Not exactly those words, but yeah. I could see this “holiday” going away in the next couple of decades. Most overrated man in history. Got lost, didn't find America, had been beaten to it anyway at least twice, was less accurate with his measurements than Eratosthenes from 1,500 years before.

I could definitely tell. The subway was well over 50% more empty during rush hour. Apparently a lot of people still get the day off.

Well I don’t like all this revisionist history about how we need to judge everyone from hundreds of years ago by today’s standards, but the fact is he got lost and was wrong about everything. It’s a bit bizarre he ever became as famous an explorer as he did. I’m assuming it had to do with the Italian immigrant population really pushing him in the late 1800s-early 1900s. It was a successful marketing campaign. No one knows Vasco Nunez de Balboa, but knew what he was looking at when he discovered the Pacific. Most explorers did. As someone who gets lost on my own block, I’m always impressed at what early explorers were able to do. Almost all of them except Columbus.

It's still big in New York. The majority of my co-workers are headquartered there and over half are unofficially "off" for today. I completely forgot it was occurring until I saw the holiday note in my Outlook calendar. Put my mail out this morning and now I feel like a moron.

Has never been a state holiday in TX. State and county offices, and schools are open.

My school district (Carrollton Farmers Branch) just north of downtown Dallas , uses today as “state fair day” and lets everyone off. It is not Columbus day by any stretch.

I get the revisionist history on Columbus to some extent. However, he was a man of his times. What he did was typical for the times in regards to how he treated the natives and his crew. I do think he always got more credit than he should have for "discovering" America. To the best of my knowledge he never actually landed on our continent. There were other Europeans that pre-dated him by hundreds of years and obviously, the Indians migrated from Asia much earlier. Still, the Columbus hatred is flat out stupid.

I was in New York Monday and they must because there was no traffic going to the airport because everyone was off work waiting on another parade to start
