I saw Franchise post about him doing the keto thing.

I actually put on approx. 30 lbs with my leukemia, now I want to drop that weight now that I am healthier.

A couple of friends keep telling me about keto, but it sort of seems like a sucker diet unless you want to live like that forever.  I had one friend she’d over 100 lbs. but he still is monitoring his keto cycles.  Another friend dropped around 40-50 lbs on it fast and then gained it back within a year.  Talk about a yo-yo diet.

The only thing I have noticed in the past two years is that my metabolism seems to have slowed down.  I used to always drop extra weight rather quickly.

I do not think I am made for the keto way.  What do you all think of this new craze?  It is like the new thing to do with friends and family.  Sort of reminds me when the Atkins came in and the keto plan seems similar.

Plus, I like some beers on the weekends. Ha!

i am just shocked that the overall fat consumption is good for anyone long term. i have some coworkers doing it, but not long enough to see real progress yet.

I drink beer every night, smoke cigars and have bad days once in awhile but I try to stick to it as much as I can without being annoying.

Overall we did a couple of things

We do time restricted eating; which for us is nothing but water between 9p and 2p; Sometimes we just eat dinner.

Outside of pizza with the kids twice a month we don’t eat any fast food. If we want something bad like French fries I cut potatoes myself and fry them.

We eat Keto meals about 85% but we still cheat from time to time.

Doing Paleo a few years ago and Keto now has re-educated my mind on how to eat. I grew up eating a lot to gain muscle mass and worked out hard enough to burn the garbage but I don’t have that luxury any longer.

If you had to pick one thing I would say start with the time restricted eating and then start cutting things that are bad for you that you can live without.

For me I gave up sweets, bread and tortillas but kept beer and all in all I’m down 14 pounds.

I read about the 5:2 diet. Fast two days (has to be a day in between the two fast days) within 7 days. Limited to 600 calories on fast days. People have reported weight loss with this but it seems like you would be shoving the food in after a fast day. No restrictions on types of food on non-fast days.  It seems hard for me to believe you drop weight with this plan.

If you are just eating eggs and drinking miller lite you can pound a few before you hit 600 calories.

I been on a Low Carb diet since beginning of April. No Pasta, Potatoes. No Junk Food. Once in a while I have a cheat day.

I do have 2 Slices of Whole Wheat Bread a day.

From April to the end of June I lost 46 lbs.

I Went from a size 54 Jeans in March to a size 44 in October.

I do eat Hamburger. I try to eat more Turkey Burgers, Chicken than red meat.

The diet is about portion control.

Also When it was warmer I was walking at Least 10,000 steps a day.

That is the kind I usually go on.

Do you do cheese in your diet or do you consider that a carb?

I still need a little room for my beer which is a low carb killer.

A problem I see with Keto is lack of menu diversity. You don’t have a lot of options when you go out to eat and some people can only eat so much of a certain thing before they tire of it.

Another thing that can be a challenge is finding the time to prep and cook everything. I change my mind all of the time about what I want to eat so cooking all day on a Sunday and making a weeks worth of food is not an option in our house.

Prep time is a big factor for me. I come home from work and the last thing I want to do is food prep for two hours.

I eat more cheese now than ever. I make Alfredo sauce a few times a month and use it to have with chicken.

As far as beer goes I drink mostly miller lite which I think has under 4 carbs per 12oz. Usually on the weekends I’ll have a stout or porter but due to the increased carb count I’ll usually just have one. If i feel like getting a buzz I’ll have a few shots first since whiskey is carb free.

We walk a lot and mix in hitting our heavy bag for cardio. Although lately I’ve been trading walking a lot of steps for a few sprints and actually have seen better results. We have a 5k Thursday morning and I’ll probably hit the bag after on an empty stomach as well to make sure I burn enough on the front end to have stuffing and mashed potatoes with my turkey.

I don’t snack a lot but usually when I do it’s pistachios or a few almonds; pretzels are obviously out.

I was amazed at what was in things once I really started reading labels. If memory serves me right a 4 pack of Hawaiian rolls is around 80 carbs. A can of Pineapple in pineapple juice with no added sugar has more carbs than a full-size snickers bar.

I grill all my meat and if we have vegetables it’s usually cauliflower which I broil or broccoli which i steam in the microwave. I’ll occassionaly peel a few full size carrots to toss in with the cauliflower with some avocado oil. We eat nitrate free bacon or chorizo and eggs a lot for dinner and That’s all pretty quick if you have it ready to go.

I might be missing out on a secret but peeling hard boiled eggs is a pain in the ass. I’d love to pickle a few dozen eggs but the idea of peeling them all drives me nuts.

Technically it breaks a fast but I put heavy cream in my coffee which is Keto friendly. I tried the bulletproof coffee and about puked; I love butter but not in my coffee.

Fad because once you get tired of the "new way of eating", you will gain all your weight back plus some. Just eat normal and watch what you eat, it's that simple.

I agree to a point but it is possible to eat Keto or low carb for a life time. I’ve backed off of the Keto and have settled on low carbs and haven’t seen a weight gain and I’m satisfied by the foods I eat.
I’ve also found that doing a 24hr fast once a week along with restricting my feeding window the rest of the week has been a huge help. Which is all simple I just don’t eat

I've never been a big believer in diets other than just eating using common sense and moderation.  I can tell you that a number of years ago I quit soda cold turkey just because I felt it was unhealthy in general.  I went from 185 to 155 in 3 months and it took me a while to realize why because I wasn't even thinking about losing weight.  I did nothing else different at all, so that shows you how bad soda fucks with your body.  But I've stabilized around 170-175 now.  I just feel better in general drinking 95% water most days.  Now when I have the occasional Pepsi, I don't even like the taste of it anymore and instantly feel bad, and I used to be a Pepsi addict.

As already mentioned, some of these fad diets are not sustainable. I know many, many people who have gone on these, lost lots of weight, and then went back to their lifestyle and gained everything back. Sadly, dieters will use these fad diets to avoid any sort of exercise. There's no two ways about it, if one wants to lose weight and keep it off, they must alter their lifestyle.

I suppose these diets would be good if one is morbidly obese and he/she must lose weight quickly. The trick is to incorporate exercising when they go off the diet.

Pop is banned in my house. Unless it's a rare occasion, my kids cannot drink it. One can make a good argument that drinking lots of pop is just as unhealthy as smoking. With that said, I'm not ready yet to endorse Bloomberg.

I went to some quack who said it would help my eyesight a couple of years back.  Yea, I don't get it either.  I lost a ton of weight but I wasn't heavy to begin with.  I got off it when my real Doc told me it was bullshit.  I went to the quack on the advice (and endless pestering) of one of my wife's friends.
I am not saying it doesn't work for certain people though.   It is just not for everyone.  My eyesight didn't improve at all.  Got worse as a matter of fact.  Nothing to do with the diet.  Just the natural evolution of my condition.

I’m not sure where everything ranks officially but it seems like refined sugar certainly has had a meteoric rise up the offender list as of the last few years.

So many diseases are being traced back to this and not just diabetes.   My cousin suffered from rosacea.  She is 28 or 29 years old now and just a year ago pretty, cut down on added sugar intact by probably 90%.  The rosacea went away.
