It’s belts and then the stripes are levels within the belt. The stripes are a combination of time served and accomplishment.

The belts are White, Blue, Purple, Brown, Black, Coral, Coral with white and then Red.

I’m currently a white belt with 2 stripes

The assistant instructor is a black belt and our main instructor is a black belt with 4 stripes. Rilion is Coral belt with 7 stripes I believe. Once you get to Black the stripes stay to Coral it’s not like he striped out at black belt and then earned 7 stripes at Coral.

The stripes are literally a piece of athletic tape they place on the different colored patch on your belt.

Very cool. Thanks for the education. It's amazing that a Gracie isn't at the highest level. Congratulations on your achievements so far. Keep at it as long as you're enjoying it.

He pretty much is, you have to be a black belt (regular and coral) for approx 48 years before you can become a red belt.

Also one thing I failed to mention was the stripes reset when you change belts except for when you reach black, from that point forward they accumulate until solid red which indicates 9th degree and instead of saying stripe some say degree for black and beyond.

So I’m still working my way along but lately it’s been a slow go. I’ve increased my class load and yet I’ve still stalled out. I’m at this strange stage where I can’t let go of who I am and can’t become who I want to be so I’ve pretty much stopped learning. As soon as I get in trouble I revert back to being big and strong thus not actually practicing Jiu Jitsu and instead it looks like I’m in a street fight.

On the bright side I’m dropping the lbs so I should look good for my Hawaii trip in a few weeks but beyond that it’s frustrating.
