***SPOILER***

The Christmas edition of SD! was taped last night to give the roster the night off, and in the main event Rusev beat Shinsuke Nakamura for the U.S. title.  Again, a little tone deaf.  Rusev was as organically over as anyone without a push I had ever seen around WM time last year as I was walking down Bourbin Street and spontaneous chants of "Rusev Day" would break out and last for 5 minutes.  It was really something to see.  But that was a year ago and lack of push has tempered how over he is, and now he's just a champion with no real build either.  And why is Nakamura the victim here?  In Vince's world, WWE's problems are Bryan and Nakamura?  lol

Also, this title change is buried on a taped Christmas show that will surely have brutally low ratings, possibly the lowest in SD! history.  So there's the fact that no one will ever see it, too.

Some positives from last night's SD!  Sanity and Gallows/Anderson are back in the tag title mix.  Why Sanity would be called up from NXT after a hot run to literally appear on TV about 3 times in 8 months is beyond my comprehension, but that seems to be getting rectified as of last night. But hell, Killian Dain was so hot after last year's War Games, if they had called him up as a singles and programmed him with Lesnar, Strowman, etc. that could've been huge to create a new big man star.  But no, another missed opportunity.

The last round of call-ups seemed to be only to fill up house show cards. Back in the day, old-timey rassling cards only needed four wrestlers, and two of them pulled double duty as referees. Now it takes a cast of thousands.

I'm reading that Raw broke the record again on Christmas Eve, getting a new low of 1.775.

I know Christmas Eve should probably be thrown out because of the holiday, but are they starting to approach Nitro level record lows with the recent trends?

I checked two different websites, I can't find any time where Nitro (even in its worst days in 2000, etc.) had a rating lower than this one.  It seems like they were almost always over 2.0.
Raw has been on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in the past, and all of their ratings were better than this.  I suppose the Vince appearance and the promises haven't made much of an impact so far.

They need a half dozen or so who have enough of an inventory of flippity-flop and jumping stuff so they can stretch a card with a small number of people and have every match reach the heights expected by today's typical fan.

Maybe they need to raid the next NCAA cheerleader championships, or find a bunch of tumblers from a travelling circus.

Nitro’s ratings were never this low. Again, a different era though. TV ratings in general were much higher across the board 20 years ago.

Yeah I get that it’s a different era and it’s comparing apples to oranges, but this isn’t good any way you slice it when comparing to the final days of Nitro. In hindsight, they started the Network at the exact right time when the technology was there and interest was high enough.

So much for the new wave of talent.  EC3 and Lacey Evans both debuted on the Raw brand yesterday in matches buried on Main Event, which should appear on WWE Network in about 2-3 weeks.

EC3 squashed Curt Hawkins and Evans lost to Natalya.

I have no idea what the point of that was.

So far I have enjoyed watching the new call-ups stand around backstage as the main roster wrestlers walk by and give them dirty looks.  They certainly are coming across as major players.

Better than debuting as a weirdo who runs around saying "pretty girls" and makes disgusting milkshakes.

In the past 12 months, WWE have promoted 17 wrestlers to the main roster, Bobby Lashley and Rhonda Rousey arrived on the main roster, and Daniel Bryan and Kurt Angle returned as in-ring performers.

In the other direction, 4 people were fired, and Paige and Mark Henry retired.

And not one promotion has been allowed to have any impact at all.

Drew McIntyre is doing well. Buddy Murphy is doing as much as he can on 205 Live. Everyone else falls somewhere between being used badly and not being used at all.
