I hope this show does justice to Gene and it’s not just a throwaway segment. This guy was a legit icon and WWE quite literally has no one else to put on TV and such low ratings that they have nothing to lose. A full hour of Okerlund highlights, outtakes, and tributes from current and past stars would be better than anything else WWE could produce.

Mean Gene dying was big mainstream news in the Twin Cities in both newspapers, local talk radio shows, and all the TV news shows. The local NBC affiliate gave his passing a lot of play because the station's studio was home of the AWA's All Star Wrestling from the promotion's early 1960s inception until the spring of 1979 with Gene Okerlund having been an ad salesman there before getting made the interview guy on the wrestling show and going on to a long pro wrestling career and great fame.

Damn. I too hope it will be a full tribute show. I might check it out in a week or 4.

WWE only gave it one segment on Raw, but it was a very fitting tribute to Gene.  The video went beyond expectations and even included a lot of the outtakes and crack-ups that have been going around the Internet.  I never expected in this day and age for WWE to show the Wendy Richter clip.

Hogan was very good here and clearly emotional.  He gave the fans what they wanted with one last cheesy '80s style promo to Gene.

It seemed like for once WWE got the tone of something right and was able to celebrate Gene's life in a way that the fans and Gene would've wanted.

There was zero backlash to Hogan, and I found it amusing that WWE found some black fans cheering him to put on camera like they were Fox News at the Republican Convention.  I didn't expect any issues, especially in Orlando, but I think this smooth appearance has cleared the way for Hogan to return to TV anytime they want.  It was smart that his first segment back was about Gene and not about him, and no mention was even made that he hadn't been on Raw in x number of years.  He just kind of slipped back in there to pay tribute to a friend like he was never gone, and that will make future appearances that are about him much easier.

No Ric Flair though.  PWInsider said he would be there, so I don't know what happened.

PWInsider is saying that WWE Network will add a Mean Gene collection at some point today.  I was waiting for that last week and am surprised it took them so long.

Hogan looked very sad. Like he truly was speaking from the heart and not a script, until he went into his promo. I think his time away and looking around at how many friends have passed has really gotten to him the past couple years. I think Savage and Warrior dying hit him hard but I think this was the toughest blow for him.

I agree, and I was impressed that he was able to turn it on for his promo when he had been in tears seconds earlier.  He stumbled a little, but it was a decent facsimile of an '80s Hogan promo.  When he started rattling off the guys who died who were all contemporaries, I thought the same thing that Hogan is almost one of the last men standing of the top stars from that era, and I think that effected him a lot.

I heard that he and Beefcake reconciled within the last year after many years of not being on speaking terms anymore (I have no idea why they fell out), so Hogan is hopefully at the point in his life where he's making amends.

I forgot that Gene was the interview for the famous "Who are you to doubt El Dandy?" line. A few people who work for WWE Network are definitely from the IWC or there's no way in hell they would've included this.
