This is pretty long overdue, but I know HTM didn't want to sign a legends contract with WWE. I wonder if he finally did it or of they will let him in without the contract.

Agree with Rossi, this is one of the most overdue. I'm not saying this because he always said it, but looking back, I think he is the greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time. That was real heat, and he was awesome.

I think this is where the modern era differs from back then, because Wayne Ferris had wrestled over ten years before he became HTM and while he came in as an "ally of Hulk Hogan", it didn't even take a month before they realized he needed to be a heel and having come through Memphis he really knew HOW to be a great heel. I don't think there was much coaching going on, he played that part spot-on from day one, even when he was a face. But when he turned, he became a magic character. Yes, it was a short run overall - but like I've said when talking about Don Mattingly potentially being in the HOF - the impact he made over that short run was much more memorable than most guys can put out over ten years.

A lot of stuff was well booked with HTM, even if it wouldn't really work today. He was the perfect chicken shit heel always finding ways to keep his title, and when he finally lost to the Ultimate Warrior it was the most memorable 30 second match I've ever seen. The place just exploded and was so ready for someone to finally kick his ass like that. These days, the fans would ruin it all by being too smart for their own good. I read somewhere along the lines that the legends contracts were changed to make them less onerous. At one point, the money the WWE gave guys in combination with the limitations on outside bookings could actually cost someone who actively takes a ton of indy bookings and convention/fanfest dates like Honky Tonk Man more money than there was to be made from the honor.

HTM was turn-the-channel heat for me. I could care less if he won, lost or was dq’ed. No entertainmrnt value for me.

Me too. He was the exact definition of "X-Pac Heat". I hated him as a face and thought he was annoying as a heel & not in the good way. He seemed like a dick in real life too, and always took himself waaaaaaay too seriously.

I did laugh at how the graphic tonight with him posed next to the DX photos wasn't very distinctive, so it appeared like he was part of that group. Cousin Oliver syndrome!

When I was a kid growing up in the 80s, I hated HTM with X-Pac heat. He was a channel changer. I specifically didn't get into the Snuka/HTM feud solely because it involved HTM even though Snuka was and still is my #1 favorite. It all had to do with the Elvis gimmick, which I thought was absolutely ridiculous and insulting in a way that Kamala and other gimmicks weren't. Fast forward to the shoot interview era, early 2000s, and the HTM shoots are some of the best. I developed a lot of respect for him. Then I re-watched some of his matches that I skipped as a kid, and listened to his interviews. He was a great heel and I really enjoy his stuff now. The Elvis gimmick still sucks, but it doesn't bother me anymore. I wish he didn't have that gimmick and either did the Blond Bomber thing like he did in Memphis, or be the Honky Tonk Man without the Elvis gimmick like he was in Stampede.

My friends and I thought Honky Tonk Man was a hilarious gimmick (as a heel), never a channel changer. I may celebrate today by getting some Honky Burgers.

I will say this about HTM, he had the slowest and least believable swinging neckbreaker ever. Even if you discount the fact that he would shake his ass for 30 seconds before doing it and opponents had to sell like they were dead all that time, the actual move was executed at a snail's pace with zero impact. Awful finisher.
