Jushin Thunder Liger Announces He Will Retire In January 2020
At the NJPW Anniversary Press Conference, Jushin Thunder Liger announced he will be hanging up his boots in January 2020 at the Tokyo Dome.

"Thank you for joining me here. I will retire next year in January at the Tokyo Dome,"said Liger (translation via Chris Charlton). "I did debut in the Tokyo Dome but that had nothing to do with my decision. I said I wanted to retire and the company said 'ok, the Tokyo dome'. I was like 'WHAT?' Only Inoki has done that! (reporter: and Choshu) ah, ok, I'm third. I might not be completely 'full up' on wrestling. But that's the best time to stop. I have done everything I want to do but I'm not sick of it. I'm still mobile, I'm not a complete wreck."

Liger stated he would like to "show himself to the world" one more time, but wouldn't call it a retirement tour.

It had to happen eventually.  Perhaps no one has wrestled a full international schedule as long as he has.  In NJPW, he's basically been Tony Garea for years now and rarely even makes the main card.  But in America and Europe, he's still a huge draw and takes on their top guys.  I wonder if he'll get one last run as IWGP Jr. Heavyweight champion.

Well, Liger just lost to Taiji Ishimori at the New Japan Anniversary show the other night in a title match. I'd doubt that he will get one, even a week reign, but you never know.

It's hard to believe that those Liger vs Pillman matches that were revolutionary to the US audience were almost 30 years ago. I saw two of them in person, and they worked just as hard at the house shows as they did on TV. At one of them, Stan Hansen was not booked and was backstage watching it from the Gorilla position because we kept seeing him pop his head out to check it out.

I didn`t immediately have a favorite wrestler, but once I saw NJPW on Eurosport and Liger it pretty much was him for a long time. I kinda stopped having a favorite wrestler afterwards.
I saw him live against Aleister Black. His music hit and I was just mesmerised, my mind drew a blank. How do they describe it - it was a religious experience.

I saw Liger in ROH up in smelly North Jersey at the old Rex Plex in Elizabeth. It was a tag match with Liger teaming with Samoa fatty against Low-Ki and Bryan Danielson. It was part of the "Weekend of Thunder".

Apart from being a legend and a great talent, the outfit and mask cover his face and body so well that he hasn't had to deal with the handicap of physically looking old to fans.
