I just watched him tag with Savage vs. Mario Mancini and some other Carpenter maybe named Rice from September 28, 1985. How much longer was Jesse active?

He tagged with Piper and Orton against the Hillbillies on the Jan 1986 SNME, so I'd have to say sometime late 1985?

He filmed the pilot for the TV Tag Team with Roddy Piper in 1990, and they faced Akio Sato and Pat Tanaka at a Los Angeles House show.

His last nationally televised in-ring appearance was probably that January 1986 SNME. According to "History of WWE", his last real match was on March 17, 1986 in Winnipeg. Lost to Tony Atlas by DQ. No idea if that's accurate, as it doesn't seem like he was pairing up with Atlas at the time. Before that, it appears his last match was a loss to Uncle Elmer in New Orleans on March 7, 1986. I think he was mostly hosting "the Body Shop" leading up to WrestleMania 2. Then he left to film Predator and when he came back in the Fall, he was exclusively an announcer/interviewer.

For an in-ring appearance (not a match), Ventura returned to the WWF while he was governor in 1999 and was the special guest referee for the Summerslam main event that year between Austin, Mankind, and HHH.

I remember in one of his books, Jesse wrote that his first match was against Omar Atlas and his last match was against Tony Atlas.

The last match that I personally remember him in, other than the Orient Express taping for the tv show, was against Tony Garea at MSG, don't know the date though.

Wasn't it against Tito Santana in the Boston Garden but thehistoryofwwe.com shows a Winnipeg match against Tony Atlas on 3/17/86.

Omar Atlas worked as a jobber a fair amount on WWF TV in the late 1980s. There was once a Superstars match with Atlas during which Jesse noted that Omar had been his first ever opponent, leading Vince to laugh at the fact that Jesse had retired but Omar was still going and get some sort of rebuke from The Body.

What exactly was Jesse's deal? I know that he had the blood clots in his lungs, and he got over it, but could he not take bumps for fear of creating more blood clots? The reason I ask is that for a guy that wasn't really wrestling much, he was taking matches right up into 1986 and if you could end up killing yourself in the ring why would you risk it?

I think the blood clots were mainly an issue in the latter part of 1984. He wrestled fairly regularly in 1985, if not to the extent of the guys who were on the road 300 days per year. The more likely thing was Jesse saw that he had a great thing going with the heel announcer spot. He could work far fewer days on the road, be at home more often, not take bumps, and use some of the time off to launch his acting career. He was used in a fair position of prominence right up to stopping wrestling in early 1986, but the truth was he had nowhere to go but down in the pecking order had he kept wrestling very far beyond then.

I agree, and I think Jesse was one of those guys who saw a future well beyond taking bumps, both inside and outside the business. He was smart and once he started carving out his own niche, he didn't have "The Sickness" and the need to keep getting beat up. If he really needed too, I'm sure he could've kept taking bumps into the early '90s and he would've gone the same route as guys like Ivan Koloff and Superstar Billy Graham and wound up as an NWA mid-carder just collecting a paycheck.
