So I decided on a last-minute trip to Philly shortly to see something called the MMR*B*Q. It’s a one-stage mini-festival with 8 bands: Shinedown, Evanescence, The Struts, Joan Jett, Fozzy, Glorious Sons, Bad Wolves, and a local band that won a contest. Pretty good lineup and only cost about $40 plus the hotel. My wife and son will do kid’s things while I’m there on Saturday and then we’ll all do something together on Sunday. I’m looking forward to it.
I’m at this festival today and I’m about 84.5% sure that The Blue Meanie was standing just off-stage for Fozzy’s set. And they killed by the way. Greatly improved from when I last saw them live 5 years ago.

This thread was great before AA ruined it.

Maybe after 50 years Michael Lang still has all his hippie sensibilities in place. Of course his way of doing business hasn't always been successful. From a pure business viewpoint Woodstock '69 lost money. Altamont is self explanatory. Woodstock '99 was a disaster. Much of what this guy touches turns into an unmitigated disaster. My take is Michael Lang hasn't run a festival with so much outside backing before and hasn't run one with the outside backers having so much say over the budget and capital infusions. Once upon a time, he could come in like a carny promoter, say there'd be these acts, this many fans, and he'd need this much money, and then someone would write a check and he'd set out to put a show together. It isn't 1969, 1994 or 1999 anymore. The money is bigger, the stakes are bigger, and the investors are now hedge funds and venture capitalists who watch every dime and want their return as promised. The days of "putting on a show" are over. Lang is a relic of a bygone era. You can't promote by the seat of your pants anymore.
