i also wondered about this.  Let’s say I buy 100 movies through Amazon.  Same goes with songs purchased through Itunes.

What happens if and when these companies go out of business?

I called Amazon a few years ago, and I could not get a straight answer.  I went up about three levels in the mgt. staircase, but the answers were very vague, “Well, I am sure they will have to make accomodations for those things you purchased.”

They have no idea, but assume you’re going to lose everything. I wrote about this many years ago. I’ve converted my iTunes purchases into different formats that might be salvageable after they go under. People are going to freak when Facebook goes under and they lose all their pics though.  I’ve got everything backed up.

Paying for a streaming service is fine, since you know what you are getting... temporary access to an ever-changing library. Paying a one-off fee to "own" media that you have to be on-line (and the service has to be active) to be able to use is ridiculous, and I don't know why anyone would buy something under these conditions.

Yeah that's why I never buy any Digital Movies from any sites or from Comcast. You never know what the future holds. If the site goes out of Business or you have to get rid of Cable and Internet.

They should have to have some sort of insurance to cover to pay those costs back if they go belly up. I am not sure if that is possible, but it would be something to protect the consumer.

I’m not really worried about it, I’m sure iTunes and amazon will live on forever even if under a different name.

Nothing lives on forever, especially in tech.

I always think about people, which one is a co-worker of mine, who has invested heavily into Amazon music and movies. You are talking about a nice chunk of change going down the shitter.

I don’t see how digital downloads will ever go away. If apple or amazon went out of business tomorrow I’m positive someone would come along and find a way for consumers to access all of their purchases. It might cost a few bucks but it won’t all be gone forever.

Growing up I had a neighbor that refused to buy cassettes and then CD’s because he already had everything he wanted on 8 track. I wonder if he ever gave in?

That is exactly why I won't movies from a stream.   I have Spotify but I pay a monthly fee for that to have complete access.  The chances of the big firms going out of business is remote but things happen.

I just read even more BS with this stuff.

Let’s say you “bought” three Disney Christmas streamed movies through Amazon. Disney can yank them from your library if they wanted to try and push people to their channel during holiday season and then put thise movies back into your library in July.

A lot of stories like this are out there.
