It looks like it's going to be a total loss.  It was there for 800 years and I just managed to slip in under the wire and see it 4 years ago.  And now it's gone.  Early reports are that there's little hope for salvaging much.  The entire roof is gone and the spire has collapsed.  It was under renovation and some asshole must've made a huge mistake.  I hope they find out who did this.

I'm not buying that it is a mistake - I suspect arson. It has been reported that several other churches have been vandalized / burned this week in France too.

I'll believe the Earth is square before I believe this was an accident. Shocking and sad day.

It is not a total loss but the inside is severely damaged. Hundreds of years of history. This isn't something that can just be fixed. I have been there. Just stunned.

I'm not a Catholic, but I understand your loss.

On Holy Week. Hmm. I think it's another case of some people doing some things.

Maybe. Maybe it was just carelessness and stupidity. Even in these dangerous times there is no lacking of that.

The fire began in the upper reaches of the attic where it would've been almost impossible for any unauthorized person to get to, so unless one of the construction workers is a terrorist it was most likely carelessness.  The initial reports are no signs of foul play, but they noted that it will be a very long investigation to find out what happened.  What really was a huge problem is that the first fire alarm sounded 20 minutes before the second.  A sweep of the building during those 20 minutes turned up nothing as they couldn't locate the fire.  If they had acted quicker and been able to put it out before that second fire alarm, they could have saved almost everything.  Just tragic.

Macron said they'll rebuild and within hours had nearly $500 million committed to the project from a handful of wealthy people and companies, but it will never be the same.  I think it's a waste of money.  You don't just rebuild something that was 850 years old.  There's no point.  It's mostly gone. They should just build a memorial where they display the surviving artifacts for a few million rather than spend a few billion to try to recreate Notre Dame.

The Russians and the Muslin extremists don't need to do anything any more. They can just sit back and watch as the right wing racists and the mad conspiracy theorists do their work for them.

So now there are videos all over the Internet of Muslim chants of "Allah Akbar" and stuff like that being added to images of the fire, as if there were actually Muslims standing around chanting that.  Of course this never happened and no reasonable person could believe that this happened, and yet the Twitter and Facebook comments are apoplectic.  People don't even need to put effort into creating fake news anymore.
