I watched the last episode last night and managed to avoid spoilers all day, other than the general reaction of displeasure from almost everyone.  I was really struck by how boring and anticlimactic the last episode was.

You could argue, and I have, that the Battle of Winterfell was too dark to see anything and had a bullshit cop-out finish, and that Dany going all genocidal was out of character or at least not enough time was put into her character change.  But at least those episodes were still exciting even with the logic gaps.

Sunday night was just blah.  A 3-minute conversation between Jon and Tyrion gets Jon to plunge a sword in Dany almost out of nowhere, and then she's just dead halfway through the show with no drama.  The dragon incinerates the throne instead of Jon and then just flies off with the body, I just don't even understand what happened there.  Then cut to weeks later, Jon basically got away with the perfect crime with no witnesses and no body, but he must've confessed to everything.  Why?  Now we have Tyrion in handcuffs allowed to make all the decisions and nominate a new king in just an absolutely God-awful scene, maybe the worst in GOT history.  That tribunal was awful and involved characters we had never seen before!  And then it's more or less over in a status quo fashion, Tyrion once again the hand, Jon once again exiled to the Night's Watch.  Oh, and Arya becomes a fucking pirate or explorer or whatever after having about 2 lines of dialogue in the whole show.  OK, whatever.

I just really hated this show more than anything else this season.  This very much seemed like swerves for the sake of swerves just like we see too often in wrestling.  This show needed to end with the Battle of Winterfell and Jon sitting on the iron throne in the last scene with the Stark sisters at his side. There was no reason for a lot of these other twists and turns that led to nothing. Predictable is sometimes the way to go if you can't think of anything better.  People did not invest 100 hours of their lives to see the throne get destroyed by dragon's fire for no logical reason, followed by a fucking petty political nomination scene where the least persuasive speech of Tyrion's life leads to the new king being "elected".  Just fucking awful.

The last episode was perfectly fine if it wasn't the last episode. They set up next season perfectly, except there is no next season. They really finalized the story perfectly if you ask me, whether they portrayed everything properly in the last two episodes is up for debate but really there was nothing else they could have done other than make the season the standard 10 episodes so that they could have made everything not seem rushed. If they spent half an hour on showing you Jon trying to figure out how to kill Dany, you'd have seen it coming. They didn't want you to see it coming but you should have known when he asked her to pardon Tyrion and she said no that her death was coming...no chance in hell Jon would allow her to kill Sansa and Arya, because neither would have bent the knee. And if he waits until her men are around, he wouldn't get near her.

Two things I totally agree with you on: First, they didn't need as many swerves. The show usually had one swerve per season, this season had one per episode and it just looked forced. Second, and most importantly, you are 100% correct that the Battle of Winterfell should have been the end of the show. But if that was the case, they needed to end Cersei before the battle and it just wasn't possible. Like Varys, they interviewed him in real life about the show and if he had any regrets. He said he would've loved one last meeting with Littlefinger, but because of how quickly everything was moving it wasn't possible. And that one sentence said it all - they moved way too fast. There's no doubt in my mind that HBO would have paid for seven more episodes, which would have leveled off the last two seasons at ten episodes like the rest. And in my mind it would've been easier to edit together, as less would have ended up on the cutting room floor.

But I still saw it coming, I think we all did, it just was anticlimactic and abrupt.  GOT at its best was a mini-Breaking Bad.  Never to that level, but at its peak it was close.  And what I mean by that was that the dialogue, the subterfuge, the unspoken looks, every little thing MEANT something.  It wasn't about the action, since there were only a couple of action-packed shows a year anyway.  There was always something more interesting happening beneath the surface.  Until the last season, and especially the last episode.  Then they did away with all of that.  From a writing perspective, I just wasn't impressed with the 2 pivotal scenes that wrapped everything up: Tyrion convincing Jon to kill Dany and the election of Bram as king.  There was just a lot of eye-rolling dialogue in those scenes for me, and I can't remember ever feeling that way watching GOT before.

And HBO begged GOT to have a standard 10-episode season, and they refused.

I enjoyed the finale. I didn't care much for this season overall, it was WAYYY too rushed as everyone admits, but the finale..eh, they stuck the landing.

If anyone argued it wasn't rushed though, if you're paying attention to detail and trying to put out the best product possible when you have TWO YEARS to do it, you don't put out episodes with coffee cups and plastic water bottles in them..

I never watched a single episode, but one thing that a lot of my friends who watched have said- when the show moved past the books, thats when it kind of fell apart.

I didn't find the finale all that bad in retrospect. Just glad the series had an actual conclusion. There are too many shows I used to watch that got cancelled without warning and things left without any resolution.

After watching the finale for the second time I wasn't too disappointed, there were a few things I would have written differently but overall it was not so bad, at least they didn't pull a Dexter or a Lost type of horrible ending on us.

Same writers as WWE after they got past the books.

my wife and i have watched this season on either tuesday or thursday night after the sunday airing.  we have had no one ruin this for us and completely avoided spoilers.
that is until this past tuesday, when watch sportscenter and aaron rodgers (who had a cameo in episode 5) gets interviewed and mentioned bran on the throne!  i was in another room and not able to get back fast enough to change the channel!
that said, i am rather indifferent to the way the show ended.  there was a lot to tie up, and like it or not, they did with most of it.  also, i think knowing it would be bran really softened the blow, as my wife was very disappointed!
