Are you for it or against it?

Negatives?   Positives?

I think the players union should go for it as long as they can negotiate more roster spots.

I likely won’t watch either way but giving players more opportunity might help the league overall with the theory that more players being coached by top tier coaches can improve.

The strategy for the 16 out of 18 could be interesting as well

I suppose football will never be what it used to be so might as well really mix it up.

I'm all for it but it will never happen in my lifetime in a sport where the inmates run the prision.

There's too much money on the line.  It will happen.  But it will be a disaster.  It will dilute the game further at a time when you already have too many shit games filled with back-ups because the stars are hurt, and with more games you'll have more of a flag football feel with even tougher contact rules.  Everyone just needs to accept that the NFL is run by the gamblers and the fantasy players now.  So many "fans" don't even have a favorite team anymore.  You talk to these kids and they only want to discuss who they have on their fantasy team or how much they made on an online betting platform.

Until Belichek pulls a Popovich and sits Tom Brady in a marquee game in late November against like the Steelers because they're 11-2 and cruising in the division.

I would assume every player's contract would have to be restructured as the players will need to get payed for the extra games.

It's pretty easy to do.  You take the existing contract and add 12.5% (if my math is correct that should be the percentage increase).  The owners will be able to more than cover that from the extra gates and I'm sure an increased TV deal for the extra 2 games.  More money for everyone, which is why it will happen.

If the NFL agrees to add some roster spots, say, between 3-5, I cannot see the NFLPA being able to turn it down and still look their fellow players in the eye. Add 90-150 jobs? It's a no-brainer. And as was said by carpetbeggar and srossi, they will restructure the pay scale and increase the salary cap. And if they can accomplish this without killing off two preseason games, then the teams REALLY make a killing because I believe all but one forces their fans to buy the preseason tickets in season ticket packages.

18 opportunities for the colored players to disrespect the flag and our president and our troops, and Normandy, and Jesus, and football, and Toby Keith. I vote hell no.

Would the 18 game schedule cancel 2 of the exhibition games?

I'm sure that will be a negotiating point.  The owners won't want to but may have to compromise.

I agree with everything you said, but you still have to get the NFLPA on board, and they've been adamantly against an 18 game season for at least 10 years now. If the NFLPA had their way, there would be zero games and all the players would be paid millions of dollars to sit at home and smoke pot all day.

I doubt there will be an 18 game season, but if one comes into being, this is when it will happen because the CBA and TV contracts come up at about the same time.

It's  what happened in the CFL when it went to 18 games.
4 exhibition games down to two. I think it leads to less prepared and inferior players making their respective teams. And ultimately the injury lists will swell.

I think ideally they have 4 preseason games, an 18 game regular season schedule with 2 bye weeks and add 1 additional wild card team per conference and try to stretch the season from August to March then they would have a short gap between the end of the season and the draft.

I’m kidding of course but I’m sure someone out there is thinking about such a concept right now; they probably work at the NFL network.

Isn’t the CFL entirely made up of inferior players to begin with?

:D

I wouldn't say that really.
Good players to numerous to list but Warren Moon was in the CFL before the NFL
And many so called big name NFL'ers came to the CFL and shit the bed. Repeatedly.

Honestly I'd say many games over the course of the season are better than the swill the NFL serves up.
On Friday night Lucky Whitehead returned the opening kick-off for a 104 yard touchdown. He could have kept running and never been caught.
Next possession our PR ran back the punt 84 yards to the opposition 4. 1 play later, TD.
One offensive play and we were up 14-0

Gotta disagree here. I've been watching the CFL for 25 years. My biggest complaints: as an American, we only get to watch 1 game a week on average. If that game is a blowout, were screwed. I swear as God as my witness, it seems like 95% of every game is a squash. And more importantly, the QBs in the CFL are by and large horrible!! The top QBs in college football are light years better than the QBs in Canada.

I think the 18 game thing will happen.

One criticism of the NFL is the 4-game preseason. How easy would it be to chop the preseason down to two games and tack on two games to the regular season?

Because it makes the league look like hypocrites worrying about concussions and player safety and extending the regular season which will increase the chance of injury.

If the NFL goes to 18 regular season games, eliminate two pre-season games, and limits all players by quarters or halfs or games to 16 total games, then it will not make the league look like hypocrites over safety issues. It will also pay respect to season and all-time record holders since they went to the 16 game season 40 years ago.
It's obviously not going to happen, just sayin' though.

I personally don't want to see it just because I'm so used to the 16-game schedule, plus the added games will likely mean more player injuries or meaningless games.

If it happens, though, I guess I'll get used to it.

I think the other thing is if you extend the season by two more weeks and have the Super Bowl later you run into "Washington's Birthday' and it sure would be cool to have the Super Bowl on Sunday and everyone off from the work the next day

I suspect that a number of season records and career records will fall in the upcoming years not because today's players are better than the former record holders but because they played two additional games each season throughout their careers.
