I thought he was directly fired for slapping Stossel, but this shoot makes it seem like there was more to it.  What's the real story?  Dave is pretty vague.  Why was Toru Tanaka involved?  I don't remember him being active this late.

It's funny how Schultz twice said that Toru Tanaka was a good friend of his. On the IMDB, it shows Tanaka was a guest star on the A-Team twice so there's a bit of a connection with Mr. T. I don't think he was ever an agent for the WWF though.

I thought Tanaka was an agent, if I remember correctly.

I didn’t watch the video. But the most plausible story I’ve heard is that Mr T mouthed off to somebody backstage at a SNME, and Shultz challenged him to fight him and got really, really pissed off. And it happened near Dick Ebersol, who told Vince that he didn’t need that kind of problem around his TV program. And Vince got worried that T would bail on Mania.

I believe it took place at the LA Sports Arena. It was also the taping of NBC's A-Team episode that features Hogan for the first time and short cameos from Steamboat, The Bulldogs, and Cpl. Kirschner. I'm too lazy too look up the date, but it was around February 1985. It wasn't a SNME taping, show didn't debut until May '85.

Vince was furious with Schultz because he worried the good Doctor's attempt at starting a fight would anger and upset Mr. T enough that T would walk out with the big angle to set up Mania happening a week later at MSG. Schultz was already getting phased down so it was easy enough to just fire him and ensure there'd be no further problems. Dick Ebersol wasn't in the mix, but otherwise the situation described a few posts up was pretty much on the line.

And the first thing Inoki did was have Schultz slap a photographer (reporter?) in Japan.
