Meltzer is reporting that there is huge pressure from FOX to expand Smackdown to 3 hours, with the 3rd hour providing programming for FS1. That seems likely to happen. That will also mean the cancellation of 205 Live, which the wrestlers on the brand have been expecting all year. 205 Live tapes at Smackdown and no arrangements are being made to continue that practice. A 3 hour show pretty much takes that off the table. There was some discussion that with WWE Network losing NXT, they needed to save 205 Live. But the counterpoint is that 205 Live’s views are so low that it’s not worth it. The Cruiserweight title could still be defended on Raw and Smackdown since any semblance of a brand split disappeared 2 months ago, but it also could be retired since Vince isn’t a big fan of weight classes on his regular programming.

Kalisto and Gran Metalik have been vocal on Twitter about leaving after their contracts expire, counting down the days. AEW has interest in both, especially Metalik, who had a huge reputation in Mexico and Japan and made it to the finals of the Cruiserweight Classic before WWE completely ruined him.  Others talents can be sprinkled throughout the various brands, including NXT which might need more talent since they’re also expanding. But with Cedric Alexander, Buddy Murphy, and Mustafa Ali already being used elsewhere, the only other one that Vince seems high on is Drew Gulak. Meltzer says Vince was a fan from the “Powerpoint presentation” comedic promos and likes his personality as well as his talent. Other than him, Cruiserweights should be worried.

HHH has commented that you will see the Cruiserweights move under the NXT banner soon, which seems to indicate pretty clearly that 205 Live will be cancelled and that talent will be given time on the expanded 2-hour NXT show on USA.

Also, Pete Dunne and Toni Storm are moving to America and expected to be part of NXT and only make cameos in NXT UK going forward.

Metalik had a great match on Raw with Rey Mysterio, wonder if that was an attempt to push him a bit more. Even maybe to become a Rey protege.

I can see why Vince likes Gulak as he has an actual persona, most of the others are fairly mundane in their gimmick (Jack Gallagher aside). The kind of character he likes. That time when Enzo ripped into the Cruiserweights on Raw for being dull came across as a message from Vince.

One problem with 205 Live was that these guys were at the level of developmental talent, but were put on the main roster with no time to actually develop. Even the guys who came up from NXT to 205 Live weren't anywhere near polished, mostly. The earliest promos for the Cruiserweights on Raw included Ciampa and Garagno. They (and we) dodged a bullet there.

Also, they record Main Event before a 3 hour Raw, so there is nothing stopping them doing 205 Live before a 3 hour SmackDown.

Speaking of Main Event, that's what they should cancel if they need to cancel a show. I had a quick watch of the latest (on the Network, so I guess 2 weeks old) episode, and it's beyond pointless. Bobby Roode and Eric Young are just wasting away as a tag team. Young had lost the beard, but he still comes out to the Sanity music, although he just wears black trunks and boots now, so he looks like a New Japan young boy.

If the booking of NXT isn't tainted by efforts to make it more like Raw and Smackdown, then the cruiserweights going to NXT can only help both the ex 205 Live guys and NXT. 205 Live was handicapped by holding it at Raw and then SD, by not letting the cruiserweights take to the air enough and instead grounding them like small WWE heavyweights, and by lousy booking.

As of last night, the WWE Cruiserweight title has officially been re-branded the NXT Cruiserweight title. Drew Gulak was backstage at Full Sail last night. The first NXT 205 Live show takes place tomorrow after Smackdown and we’ll see how long that lasts.

The NXT Writers have control over 205 Live

205 Live was cancelled, at least for tonight. The cruiserwights were backstage preparing for the show when Vince made the call to just focus on Smackdown tonight and not do a 205 at all. It was a last-minute decision and does not bode well for the future of the brand, but it is expected to be back next Friday.
