That one had a strange ending to it. Just as it was getting going, Hulk Hogan got into a dispute with Vince McMahon over something and quit. I think his WM19 payoff was lower than he'd expected. So the WWE said that Stephanie McMahon, who was a babyface GM of Smackdown and had hired Mr. America while clearly in on the fact it was Hogan, was said to have discovered it was Hulk and then enforced his suspension. I don't think Hogan came back for something like two years after that and for a while was back on the list of people not to be mentioned on TV.

I've always liked the "you know who it is" mask trick. It was usually a babyface who did it, so I just kinda' assumed that the pro-babyface announcers weren't dumb, but also in on the joke.

It's also kind of a legal loophole. "It says here someone named Dusty Rhodes can't wrestle... but what about someone named Midnight Rider?! Ha! Gotcha, there!"

Not really the same thing, but two awesome masks angles I can recall are Chris Adams as the "Avenger", circa 1983 against Jimmy Garvin. Then in 1998 when Dean Malenko entered a battle royal (and won) as "Ciclope". In both cases, the audience was (mostly) shocked when the guy un-masked.

Storyline wise, the camera caught him lifting up the mask and doing the "shhhh don't tell anyone" motion to the crowd. I think it was Vince that actually went on TV and fired him after that.

Dusty did it as Uvalde Slim or some dumb shit.

I sort of like it when they do it and at least try to pretend that they are a masked wrestler and not the banned wrestler. Uvalde tried to make it obvious that he was Dusty and would even lift the mask so the camera could get a little peek. It destroyed the credibility, because Solie and the "promotor/commish" couldn't logically say they didn't know who it was. At least with the Midnight Rider & others they could say, "We don't have proof."

The Mr R switch with Tommy Rich and Brad Armstrong getting over on Ted Dibiase in Georgia is probably my favorite.

The Midnight Rider gimmick with Dusty was good - especially when the Midnight Rider beat Flair for the title but then had to relinquish the title since he refused to unmask in front of the NWA President (apparently masked champions were not allowed in the NWA).

However, the Midnight Rider gimmick also got stale when Dusty tried to recycle it years later against the Four Horsemen. Bill Watts was also using the Midnight Rider gimmick in Mid-South so it was difficult to determine who was actually under the mask when reading through the match results in the Apter mags.

For modern day, Edge and Christian as the Conquistadors was a good comedy bit
