Former Impact Wrestling Champion John Hennigan has signed a deal to return to World Wrestling Entertainment, PWInsider.com has confirmed.

Hennigan, 39 years old, had a long run with WWE after winning the third season of their Tough Enough reality series, performing for the promotion through 2011 as John Morrison.    During his first run with the company, he held the WWE Intercontinental Championship, the WWE version of the ECW title and had several WWE Tag Team title reigns with Joey Mercury.

Hennigan was also one of the top stars in the El Rey Network's Lucha Underground promotion, performing as Johnny Mundo and holding the Lucha Underground Championship.  In Mexico, Hennigan held the AAA Mega Championship as well as their Cruiserweight title.   Hennigan's most recent national run had been with Impact Wrestling, where he debuted in 2017.

Over the course of his Impact run, Hennigan (as Johnny Impact) held the promotion's top title and had been one of the cornerstones of the company.    He departed this past July after the Slammiversary PPV.  He had really found himself there with his "Mayor of Slamtown" persona.

Outside of professional wrestling in recent years, Hennigan has also cultivated quite an acting resume in both independent films and TV series over the last several years.   Hennigan has a new short horror film The Iron Sheik Massacre set for release this Fall.
He co-wrote, executive produced and starred in the independent film Boone the Bounty Hunter, which was released in 2017.  Hennigan appeared in the first season of Netflix's GLOW and appeared in Russell MadnessSharknado 5 and Hercules Reborn, among other films.

One would assume that Hennigan, who has slipped in and out of a number of in-ring names over the years, will revert back to his old John Morrison WWE ring name upon his return.

Good for him, he's been on fire the last few years and deserves the big stage.

I hope they assign him to Smackdown, change his name to Johnny Fox, and make him Alicia Fox's brother.

This surprises me. But it's nice to see him get the big paycheck. I'm sure he used AEW as leverage because there's no doubt in my mind he could've shown up on their TV on opening night.

Yeah I'm sure his deal was for a big chunk of change.

He picked the perfect time to sign with them as AEW on TNT and Smackdown on Fox are debuting next week and NXT now on USA.

I would take a guess to say he is up there among the top earners in wrestling now as far as downside guarantees are concerned.

He actually would have been a nice surprise for the first AEW show if they had signed him. (Which I'm sure they tried)

Good for him. I really enjoyed his run on Impact.

Miz & Morrison back together again ? That was implied last night on SD after Miz turned heel.

Maybe, I'm assuming the team of Roode/Ziggler is no more, so they might fill that heel team spot.  It looks like they just brought the Usos in on Smackdown too.  I'd rather see the Usos on Raw so they can work with the Viking Raiders, and Miz/Morrison as faces on Smackdown.  They might as well keep Cesaro/Nakamura together (after Nakamura drops the I.C. title to Strowman) to fill the heel team slot vacated by Roode/Ziggler.

I was surprised that they seemed to be going back to this team since both guys have improved so much since last time they were together. But that always seemed to be the plan as Morrison’s re-introduction to WWE on The Bump was almost exclusively covered by an interview of him and Miz together and a discussion of their real-life friendship and past success together. So I wasn’t surprised when he debuted officially on Smackdown associated with Miz again. Not the choice I would’ve made though.

For those who watch Miz & Mrs., every time they had a party you could see glimpses of Morrison in the background. He was signed to Impact or Lucha Underground and never mentioned on camera, but he was around. So you knew they remained close. On The Bump, they showed some of the unused footage from that show featuring Morrison and some of his drunken breakdancing antics at their parties.

This is a major reason why my wife and I don’t waste our time watching WWE anymore.  No reason when Hennigan comes in that he can’t be inserted into the main event picture.  It would be as simple as having him beat Reigns or somebody on that level.  It’s maddening that they would take two guys as talented as he and Miz and make them a tag team...not to mention a tag team that will probably be told to give them “seven great minutes” this week.

I highly doubt they are a tag team but more of a two man faction which makes sense, miz goes back to feuding for the secondary title and Johnny nitro goes for the heavyweight title

They'll start him off slow.  He wasn't a main eventer when he left WWE and no way Vince wants to validate his time in Impact and Lucha Underground with an immediate main event run now.  He'll have to earn it again.  Nothing outside of WWE counts.
