I'm going to tonight's game.

Hey DFG or Big J, you get yourself out here, I'll pick you up at the airport, put you up for a night and buy your ticket to game 2 or 5.  Only condition is you have to wear Angels red.

Thanks for the offer tbolt...it would probably be cheaper for me to fly out to Cali and go see a game there than it would be to head across town to buy a ticket at Fenway.  Goddamn pink hats have made tickets impossible to find and afford.

Don't underestimate or count out your Angels for a second.  They're stacked top to bottom--offensively, starting pitching-wise, middle relief, closer and manager.  I can't find a weakness in their game at all.  (The midseason Tex deal solidified their awesomeness.) That, combined with the fact they took 8 of 9 from the BoSox this year makes me very, very worried for how this series will turn out.

It's why I was praying the Sox would take the East from the Rays; I think the BoSox would've had a much easier time against the ChiSox, and the Rays would've roughed the Angels up a bit for the ALCS matchup.  Oh well, not meant to be.

Those TV ratings will be huge.

WORST.  NEILSENS.  EVER.

Precisely what I'm hoping for.

Sports fans need to learn about how baseball is great outside of NY/CHI/BOS again.

How will that be done if nobody's watching, though?
See 1991 and subsequent ratings (till the strike ruined everything)

Great point.  Of course, 1991's gonna be tough to recapture.  That whole "Worst to First" dynamic of both teams, not to mention two of the most exciting young teams of the era.  Still, good point.

Either Cubs-White Sox or Cubs-Red Sox would have an apocalyptic feel to it.

Well the real apocalypse would have been in '04 if the Cubs and Red Sox had met, before the Sox won two titles. It'd still be a ratings bonanza now, though. And a Cubs-White Sox series, a so-called Red Line Series, would probably leave Chicago a smoldering pile of wreckage by the end. I'd rather have Cubs-Red Sox or Cubs-Angels, though.

A Cubs/BoSox series would probably set ratings records.  It's the one MLB is drooling over.  If this were the NBA, I'd say pencil it in.

Ha - rewatch some of those early 00's A's playoff series - all but the Twins one.  MLB does the same thing NBA does.

The time they really tried and failed was '02 Angels/Yankees.

I think it would get a good number by today's standards, but it would not set records. Look at ratings as recently as the '80s where the WS would still do a 25-28. In 1980 they had a 32.8 for instance.

However it might get the best number of the '00s, where the average is somewhere around a 13 Nielsen figure. Last year they got 10.6. In 2004 they got a 15.8. The Red Sox novelty did not carry into 2007.

As for the NBA, they will likely not do Bird/Johnson or Michael Jordan ratings ever again. They had an 18 as recently as 1998 for Bulls-Jazz. The Celtics-Lakers this year drew 9.3. The party is over.
