Anyone who read Apter mags in the early 70's heard of The Convict (Stan Frazier). I'm thinking this is probably the only thing of his on tape anywhere. A Who's Who of gajin before the match starts. Dutch Savage, Don Leo Jonathan, Pampero Firpo (who actually manages The Convict for this match). Interesting because it's so rare.

I don't think the gimmick lasted any longer than a year or so. Apter wrote a classic article about him in Inside Wrestling telling how the Convicts family had been wiped out and because of the revenge he took, he became....well....a Convict. I don't think he even worked on top once at the Friday night Olympic Auditorium shows. However, in the Southern California circuit, he made a great attraction for the smaller buildings.

I can imagine in 1970 that character was amazing, and I'm not surprised it didn't last because of State Athletic Commissions not "getting it". But Frazier was a huge man for that era, and to see him in a pseudo jail outfit complete with striped mask just works as far as I'm concerned. A lot better than the Nailz gimmick.

Even in this video he looks freakishly large. The California SAC always played ball with Lebell and had been smartened up since the 50's due to the fact that there had been several high profile lawsuits of SoCal promoters suing each other. Guys like Frazier couldn't hang around too long because of their limitations in the ring, the character would grow stale relatively quickly. Right before The Convict, Southern California had been terrorized by the nefarious The Mummy (Benji Ramirez) so the audiences were no strangers to extreme gimmicks.

Great post Wong Lee. Nice to see, rare footage. Not a technical classic but interesting nonetheless.

Here's the cover for the Inside Wrestling article. The interview was done by a 'female reporter' who became so frightened by The Convict that she ran screaming out of his apartment.

He was a 'convict' after all. Sexual assault charges filed?

Its good that there was a 'work release' program that allowed him to wrestle at night and on weekends and even flee the country to Japan.

I can't believe the amount of times he jobbed. You'd think a huge, scary dude would've crushed a bunch of people before jobbing on the way out of the territory.
