Here was his comment

"You people love — they come here, whatever it is — you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey," Cherry said. "The least you could pay is a couple of bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys pay for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada. These guys pay the biggest price.”

I'm not sure why it's so hard for sportscasters to shut the fuck up about politics and cover sports. I say the same thing about Bob Costas and assholes on the left. This wasn't the forum for Don Cherry to spout his nonsense, and from what I understand the poppy issue he was upset about is fake news and something that isn't even happening. But Cheery has a LONG history of saying stupid shit going back 2 decades, so this was bound to happen in this day and age. I haven't heard anyone who's upset about this move from a hockey perspective and not a political one. The consensus seems to be that he hasn't been good in forever.

The pc freaks win again. At least he goes out on his own terms.
He was asked to apologize but refused, unlike that ass kisser Ron MacLean.

There are things he's always been passionate about with the military being near the top.As far as his comment he has and always will call it as he sees it and based on my observation whrn I've been in the city the last couple weeks many people don't wear a poppy, and from others that I know that live in the GTA seemingly very few people wear a poppy, so he isn't really wrong.
But Coach'e's Corner is on a one minute delay and airs 3 times on Saturday night because of games in different time zones. They knew what he said and aired it two more times. Sportsnet is hypocritical for firing him on Remembrance Day taking away for  what the day is truly about.
And Ron McLean should have bern fired right along with Cherry thrn instead of being allowed to make his rubbish condemnation and apology the nect day.
Cherry in his 30 years on Coach's Corner has said way worse and other than a short period where he was sent to the penalty box and then brought back has survived because of ratings.
He is pretty close to or maybe well past senile now but we live in a time where people have a pathological need to get their panties in a twist about everything but their own lives are so pathetic they have nothing better to do. Song lyrics, statues, a politician at a costume party 20 years ago in blackface ( @as they sit and watch some of their favorite old time actors perform in blackface and say how great those movies were) , etc.
A d the media puts out the most sensationalistic headlines they can yo draw out the radicals.Radio call in shows invite you to call in with your opinion and if it differs from the snowflake opinion the station has adopted so they can all go to heaven when they die you are shut dow.CJOB in Winnipeg here has done that since the story broke.
Geoff Currier one of the guys from the morning said "yeah ok toots" to a woman because he didn't like her take and shut her down. He later apologized after he was called on it on air.  Hypocrisy.
And to finish I'll say I'm very offended by you people who are offended by the term "you people ".
What this world is missing right now is more Archie Bunkers.

And oh by the way, I totally agree with one thing that you said - Don Cherry has said a TON of stupid shit over the years.  He could've been fired a dozen times.  But in my opinion, to fire him now, it's just a way to kick him out the door.

Rossi has someone who writes for him or the shit he spews on here would be even stupider   If that was possible. Of course that's just my opinion.Beej, can I be fired for that?

Cherry has been saying stupid things for years and his big mouth finally caught up with him  and its a different time. And the sad thing is he doesnt realize there was something wrong with what he said. Just like archie bunker or Trump. Cherry is a Trump supporter by the way. And yesterday Cherry did a interview with Fox news. What a surprise. That tells you everything.lol

You're comparing me writing in a General Discussion forum on a message board to Don Chery talking about something other than hockey on a broadcast in which he's being paid to talk about hockey?  I don't get your point at all.  You can be fired by your employer for doing pretty much anything, just like I can get banned from the board.  But I don't think I take S&W as seriously as Cherry takes his job.

You're also missing the broader context of Cherry (in other forums) going on and on about immigrants being ungrateful and not buying poppies, and freaking out over special LGTB poppies (which turned out not to be a thing).  The underlying message, based on DECADES of tirades, wasn't "I support the military" it was very clearly "I hate ragheads and faggots."  He's said as much tons of times and he's gotten away with it.  This time, he did it while on the job and his employer didn't like it.  I don't see the problem.  I bet he and I agree both agree that bakers shouldn't have to bake cakes for gay weddings, so we should both agree that his employer can fire him for saying controversial shit.

Bob Costas should've been fired for his gun control rant during a game years ago, for the record.  It was a sickening abomination, much worse than what Cherry did.  So yeah, there's a liberal bias.  But your employer still has the right to fire you or not fire you over whatever they want.

Don Cherry offered to apologize and when asked to go further than he was apparently willing to go, whatever that was, he said no and that was it. Despite that exchange, he didn't go out on his own terms when all was said and done. He got fired midseason. Going out on his own terms would mean retiring by his own choice minus any scandal or controversy, whether that meant having a final season of farewells and nostalgia capped by an emotional farewell after the last game of the Stanley Cup Finals or simply announcing quietly in midsummer that it was time to hang it up and that it's been a blast.

I think that Rogers, if not the CBC before it, had probably been wrestling for a long time with the dilemma of wanting Don Cherry gone, but not being able to push out an icon without a backlash. Various minor incidents have occurred through the years and if not for those many prior statements, Don Cherry might have come through this storm had it been a one off thing. However, this was the straw that broke the camel's back as part of content accumulated a lengthy period time. It finally gave his employers the ability to send him packing and be seen as justified by a good portion of people and the media instead of as meanies who unfairly gave Uncle Don the boot by a strong majority.

Duuuude, usually you and I think right along the same lines, however, I agree with Rossi 100% here. Cherry has a national stage with millions of viewers. His opinions about anything other than hockey should be kept to himself. Rossi and me and you say our opinions on a message board that has maybe 25 active members. Plus we've all 'known' each other for over ten years.

I don't think Rossi was offended by the comment, I think what he's implying is it wasn't the stage for it. On that I agree completely. Everyone and their mother has a podcast now. Let him start one and let his lead story be how Hitler was misunderstood and a segment that touches on "Mohammed Atta: Bad Guy or Bad Pilot".

Let him start one and let his lead story be how Hitler was misunderstood and a segment that touches on "Mohammed Atta: Bad Guy or Bad Pilot".I still don't understand the outrage, nor do I understand who he offended and why they would feel offended.  That's probably my fault.  I have zero problem with Cherry getting fired, it's the right of the employer.  Maybe I'm off a step today because of just getting back from a 10-day stay in Florida and waking up to 22 degree Westchester this morning.  But what my main point was, the man said what he said...and when he was told to take it back, he basically said "fuck you, I meant what I said".  We should all appreciate that - it cost him his job, but he was man enough to take the heat.

Also - I have no beef with Rossi, and being off a step probably caused a poor analogy.  It just surprised me that he piled on when the reality is that most spineless people would've apologized and kissed ass to save their job and Cherry didn't do it.  He's said a lot of worse things over the years, to lose his job over this just seems weak.  And as somebody else said - they ran the show on a delay and replayed it twice.  If it is as bad as they say, the entire production team (or at least their boss) should get the axe too.  I think they were looking for a reason to dump Cherry, and they got one.

Exactly.  Although you are wrong about one thing.  I was highly offended that Don Cherry actually thinks that Canada has a military.  Quite offensive to real militaries.

The didn't renew his contract last summer but public pressure got them to re-up for one more year. They've been cleaning out their higher priced sportscasters because they are taking a bath on their hockey package and what they paid for it. This was all they were looking for to fire him, and he delivered as expected.
Ron McClean throwing him under the bus in the aftermath was awful IMO. Fuck that ass kissing piece of trash.

End of the Day Cherry was no longer relevant and at 85 it was time for him to retire anyways.

And oh by the way, I totally agree with one thing that you said - Don Cherry has said a TON of stupid shit over the years.  He could've been fired a dozen times.  But in my opinion, to fire him now, it's just a way to kick him out the door.

Exactly.  Although you are wrong about one thing.  I was highly offended that Don Cherry actually thinks that Canada has a military.  Quite offensive to real militaries.

And really Rossi since if Wikipedia was a person you'd have sucked his cock dry you might want to educate yourself about exactly how much the Canadian Military has done to provide you with the opportunity you have to be the condescending pompous cock sucking piece of shit you are.  You don't know half the shit you think you do.

Ironically enough, my stepfather is in the Canadian Military, he's a landed immigrant from Peru, and probably has no idea what the fuck a poppy is used for other than Opium.

You're wrong about this not being a forum for Cherry to say things like this.  For 30+ years, Coach's Corner has been a platform for Cherry to talk about both hockey and current events, often on questions fed to him by Ron McLean.  In particular he has used his platform to support the Canadian armed forces.  I wouldn't want to guess how many times he's ended Coach's Corner with a choked-up tribute to a fallen soldier.

On Tuesday, I tuned in to Toronto's FAN590 for their lunchtime hockey show and I couldn't make it 5 minutes.  I could smell the cucked-out sanctimony emanating from their hosts all the way across the border.  All of them were in a race to prove how woke they are with regards to Canada's great multi-cultural experiment.  Meanwhile, on Toronto's mega Baby Boomer station, AM740, a majority of the calls were supportive of Cherry's right to say what he said and in agreement with his assessment of ingratitude by "those people".

Undoubtedly, the most disgusting reaction was the aforementioned hothouse flower Ron McLean, who wasted no time publicly throwing Grapes under the bus, despite having had the opportunity to push back in real time if he'd been so inclined.  Fuck that faggot.

To be perfectly honest - and nobody here has even tried to tell me exactly what he said that was so wrong - when I first heard him say "You People", I thought he was talking about all of the Americans that moved to Canada. I shit you not. This is why, to me, there's no implication of racism in his words. Would I be racist to say "get all of those Canadian immigrants out of the US right now!!"? In a lot of your minds, probably not. But if I replace the word Canadian with Mexican, boy, I'm fucked. This is why I say the world we live in today is fucking pathetic. Words don't make you racist or prejudiced...actions do. Don Cherry could be the president of the Killer Karl Kox fan club for all I know, but to this American, his words were very tame. Getting fired for saying "you people" when he's broad stroking an entire nation.

I read recently an article in Sports Illustrated from '93 where it said he was close to getting fired for his over the top comments. So I think he was an extremely lucky man to survive for 26 years on thin ice and still make controversial statements which made no sense.

We are talking Mets fans here, Mr. NYC...you know their fanbase.  He never gets away with giving credit to Nazis no matter what year.  But I get your point and you made me laugh out loud at my desk today as I heard those words in the "later years" Ralph Kiner voice in my head.

I mean Mets fans are mostly from Queens and Long Island so I think they'd be totally down with giving the Nazis a second chance.  Even though Queens is the most diverse neighborhood in the world, Yankees fans tend to be a lot more diverse than most Mets fans.

But on another note, go to a game at Fenway and play "Let's find the black person" some time.  It's loads of fun and will keep you occupied the entire 4 1/2 hour game.  You will spot literally 100 dudes wearing kilts before you find one guy who even has a tan.

You want to explain this commentSure.  Every time I go to what was once Shea Stadium, and is now Citi Field, somebody on my left or right is eating a Knish and most likely one person in their party is wearing a yarmulke.  This is not a bias, it's a fact - there are a shitload of openly Jewish people at Mets games.  Meaning, you know that they are Jewish based on what they wear.  The owners are Jewish too, and they'd never have a Nazi sympathizer on payroll.  Hell, they really don't want ANYBODY on payroll, but that's for another thread.

Whether you think the forum is for softball questions or not, the fact is that Coach's Corner never limited itself in that way.  Seriously, how many times have you ever watched it?   Your opinion is irrelevant since the CBC brass went along with it for over 3 decades, because it put assess in seats.  I didn't say he was fired for paying tribute to the military, but this whole thing boiled down to Don resenting the lack of support shown to Canadian armed forces (by the wearing of a poppy on Veterans/Remembrance Day).  In other words, his firing was precipitated by a discussion about paying tribute to the military.  You're really splitting hairs here.

And if you really listened to his message, he wasn't just singling out immigrants not wearing the poppy, he was pretty pissed that so many native Canadians weren't wearing it as well.  And the next day when they asked him to apologize and he refused, he doubled down and that statement was more verbally like what he was trying to get across in a one minute deal the night before.  85 years old with a guy talking in his ear telling him to wrap it up, it's not a surprise he may have spit out words that didn't quite match the thoughts.

it wasn't just the "You people" that was the problem. it was "you people come here" he was taking aim at immigrants. (Trump has done the same) the poppy wearing thing is not a immigrant problem. when don cherry is walking down the street he has no idea when he see's people without poppies where they are from. I would say it's more of a young person problem. but anyways Cherry for years has said dumb stuff that will be described as "politically incorrect", or "just telling it like it is" by his defenders. his defenders keep saying it shows how patriotic he is and ignoring the bigoted part of it.

for years bigots have said "you people come here and take our jobs". "you people come here and complain how we do things here. if you don't like it go back to where you came from" "you people come here and don't learn proper English". its the same routine.

We've had Don for some charity events and I've met him probably about 15 or so times over the years. Great with people if there's a camera around. Once the camera is gone - completely different story. Douche-chill worthy. We had to stop inviting him (and paying his appearance fee).

I will say his love for the service men and women is genuine, and I think Rogers REALLY wanted out of that contract and was looking for the first thing they could, and this is it. I believe he made substantially more than MacLean for less than a tenth of the work.

Not really gonna shed any tears for him. He's been the old man yelling at the cloud since at least 1996 and gets to go out a martyr with a few million in the bank and really, at that age what more could you want?

Bobby Orr finally has something to say.

When he coached the Boston Bruins, Don Cherry always said he didn’t worry because he had Bobby Orr on his bench.
And now, just like back in the 1970s, over the boards and on the ice comes No. 4.
“He got fired on Remembrance Day. That is just wrong,” said Orr of Cherry’s dismissal from Hockey Night in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet.
“This whole thing is unbelievable. Don Cherry is a good man and to do this to him is disgusting.”
With many of Cherry’s friends abandoning him, Orr diving into this brawl couldn’t have come at a more critical time.

The Hockey Hall of Famer tells the Toronto Sun that “enough is enough” of smearing and picking on his old coach.
“To throw him under the bus like this is wrong,” said the former Boston Bruins great.
“And for his partner to do it as well. Shame on him.”
Like Cherry, Orr is disappointed Coach’s Corner co-host Ron MacLean buckled to corporate pressures to issue an apology that included saying, “Don made comments that were hurtful and prejudiced.”
This came after MacLean offered a thumbs-up on air and said “That’s why we love you.”
Orr is of the view that Cherry’s awkward wording was taken out of context and turned against him to destroy him.
“I know what he was saying. We all know what he was saying. He was saying we should buy a poppy. All of us,” said the pride of Parry Sound, now a player representative.
“Don loves our great game. Next to his family the most important people in his life are the military, the police, firefighters and paramedics. He is no bigot. After 38 years on television, if you haven’t figured out Don Cherry, there’s nothing I can do.”
In fact, the legendary defenceman said he is the opposite of a bigot.
“You have no idea the stuff he does for people that nobody knows about,” said Orr. “Don is one most generous people I know.”
On his Coach’s Corner comment about “you people” who “come here” to enjoy our way of life and “milk and honey,” Orr said not once did he think it was meant to be racist.
“I know him better than anybody else, Joe,” said Orr over the phone from Boston.
“Yes, he’s my friend. But I have known him a long time and I know he is not a bigot or a racist.
“He is the most honest and generous guy there is.”
And perhaps the most patriotic about Canada.
“Who has done more?” asked Orr.
“He’s very good to the veterans, the police, the firefighters, minor hockey players and fans. They all know what he meant and I know what he meant.”
While there is definitely a movement relishing Cherry’s downfall, there are far more hockey fans who understand this is an unnecessary career and legacy assassination attempt.

Orr doesn’t think it’s going to work.
“Don Cherry is going to be just fine,” he said.
Many fans are pushing to have him reinstated in time for Saturday night, and there have been discussions behind the scenes by some of the players involved to try to find a way.
But Orr doubts it will happen.
“I can’t see Don wanting any part of that,” he said.
He also feels the character assassination against Grapes is repugnant.
“I am worried about Don as a man. His health and well being. That’s why I have been calling so much. I don’t want anything more to happen to him.”
And neither do most hockey people.
“I have never had more calls on anything. Down here in the United States it’s all impeaching the president and up there it’s all impeaching Don Cherry,” said Orr. “The hockey players love Don. And they respect him.”
So does the Coach’s Corner audience, said Orr.
“There is all of this talk about who is going to replace Don Cherry?” said Orr.
“You don’t replace Don Cherry. There is only one Don Cherry.”
The fact the establishment turned on him for encouraging people to wear poppies is “discouraging and disappointing.”
All of it, said Orr, was unnecessary.
“And it is definitely unfair.”

The consensus seems to be that he hasn't been good in forever.Dude, do you even read what you write sometimes?  You bring up everything that the police do wrong on a Sports message board.  Yes I know it's different and yes I know that we have a General Discussion forum, but you really shouldn't shit on a guy who has a one minute segment to say whatever he wants and then stand by it...it was his opinion, he got fired for it, and he told the network to fuck off when they demanded an apology.   You and I have gone back and forth about the cops, in a lot of cases I agree with you and in a lot I don't agree with you, but you never back down because you are passionate about the cause.  Don Cherry is passionate about the military, and on Rememberance Day, he made a plea to the people to support them.  I can say to you, or to anybody, that if you were offended by his totally benign statement then you really have issues.  In a day and age when everybody is offended about everything, this one seems totally ridiculous.
And oh by the way, I totally agree with one thing that you said - Don Cherry has said a TON of stupid shit over the years.  He could've been fired a dozen times.  But in my opinion, to fire him now, it's just a way to kick him out the door.

Exactly.  Although you are wrong about one thing.  I was highly offended that Don Cherry actually thinks that Canada has a military.  Quite offensive to real militaries.

The Canadian Military goes in and cleans up after you people ( you like that) shit the bed and make a total mess of things.

That

Pretty sure the Canadian military is Our Lady Peace with kitchen knives

“And it is definitely unfair.”

someone tell Bobby No one is saying Don isn't patriotic, loves the war veterans, gives to charity, loves Canada.lol he also has outdated views on a bunch of things.lol apparently Bobby Orr is a fan of Tucker Carlson. if this is true I don't want to hear what Bobby's politics are because it might ruin my view of him. I had already heard about him turning a person in a wheelchair down for a autograph. I don't want to hear any more.lol

The Bobby Orr autograph dealie comes down to 2 things:

1. He went broke in the 80's thanks to Alan Eagelson. Signing stuff was one of the ways he recouped that lost money for years.

2. Orr REALLY has an issue with people selling stuff that he signed for them. Remember hearing a story from him of how he was at a children's hospital charity event and when he left people were selling stuff he signed for their kids in the parking lot. Someone who used their kid and a sob story to get an autograph tried to sell it back to Orr for 60 bucks (they didn't recognize Bobby - he was wearing sunglasses)..

TORONTO -- Hockey commentator Don Cherry says the network that fired him "made it impossible" for him to address the comments that led to his dismissal.

He says on his new podcast that he was unwilling to accept Sportsnet's conditions to have him return following his "Coach's Corner" segment on "Hockey Night in Canada" on Nov. 9.

Cherry says "two little words just seemed to set everybody off." The 85-year-old broadcaster made remarks many felt were critical of immigrants for not wearing Remembrance Day poppies. Cherry used the phrase "you people." He contends he was not singling out minorities.

Cherry says he was willing to explain the comment but not apologize. He was fired Nov. 11.

The 27-minute "Grapevine" podcast features Cherry and son Tim.

I wouldn’t autograph shit for free either if I was him and someone tried to work me like that.

why am I not surprised he would get a podcast. needs the attention. lol he said "you people come here". he was aiming at immigrants. he has had a problem with "foreigners" for years. old interviews are surfacing with more examples of it.

I think it's more a surprise that this was one of his milder rants from his career being the one that got him canned, Spatulapup. Not that he aimed his commentary at certain groups. I honestly didn't think it was anything fireable when I heard it, but I'm old.
More for me was Ron McClean finally showing his true colours and throwing Don under the bus. Thats the part that makes me mad...Don getting fired was an eventuality that was gonna come sooner than later. As noted, as this little thing was it, is kind of bizarre to me.

Anyhow the legend of Don Cherry isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Too many people still love him and will continue to do so for this to be a career-tarnisher.
