Meltzer is reporting that he has a source who is a FOX executive who is extremely unhappy with Smackdown creatively as ratings continue to diminish.  Last week was the lowest rated show not counting the FS1 debacle that did 888,000.

The executive was particularly annoyed by last week's opening segment that featured Baron Corbin bringing out a dog mascot and making fun of Roman Reigns being the "Big Dog".  He told Meltzer, "That is just a really goofy Segment 1, and there's no chance to retain an audience after that.  The humor just wasn't there."  It's a little funny that THAT'S where the guy finally drew the line.

Meltzer says WWE had some leeway creatively as long as ratings were strong, but even USA intervened periodically when ratings dropped, and FOX is far more aggressive than USA when it comes to this.  There is intense pressure on WWE now to tighten up these segments as long as ratings are low.

WWE has never been able to write comedy. Finally someone is calling them out and they have to listen.

The E can’t do comedy but is fox also looking for too serious of a product? After all It is adults acting out a scripted fight.

I think that FOX is looking for ratings period, and when the ratings aren't there you're going to get more criticism and micro-management.  If that segment did 4 million, no one cares that it wasn't funny.  But it did about 1.2 million so the people paying for this content say, "What the fuck was that garbage?"  Much like the rest of us.  It was a really painfully unfunny segment, and there's been so many of those the past few years.  Vince is just so high on Corbin though and thinks that he has real heat and not X-Pac heat.  I don't see it, and if FOX doesn't see it either then maybe he has to listen.

Predictably, sources say Vince wrote that segment himself and thought it was absolutely hilarious and they Corbin hit it out of the park.

So were the serious movies Rocky, Fight Club, Million Dollar Baby, and countless others. Both sports and entertainment fans seemed to like those serious movies about adults acting out a scripted fight. Honestly, the lack of drama and too much comedy is probably the #1 reason why I prefer AEW over WWE.

Fuck, the executive should throw his weight around and demand that Meltzer be brought in as head booker...or at least a consultant. lol

Could you imagine being a fly on Vince's office wall when the Fox brass dropped that on him?

I know you meant it as a joke, but would Fox insist on an outside consultant if the ratings continue as they are? Maybe not Meltzer but say Mike Johnson (or someone else on a par with him)?

My point being is Fox is a legit sports channel and Pro Wrestling is fake fighting. Brock was drafted to Fox and Cain ended up on Fox so my first thought was that Lashley and Riddle would migrate to Fox as well and they would have a little ex MMA crew to “legitimize” their version of the E.

Wrestling can be a lot of things but legit Will never be one of them.

Wrestling occupies a weird space in the world, not every fan of Rocky will like Wrestling but a lot of wrestling fans will like Rocky.

FOX has no idea who those guys are and would want a TV person, not a wrestling one.  If you're going to script this stuff anyway, it might not be the worst idea to get someone who can string 3 coherent sentences together because WWE's writing is just pitiful.  But I know they could do better and are just writing for Vince, so that will always be the problem.

I guess Fox execs have missed almost all WWE shows over the last decade.

So last night they went there and let Punk comment on that segment. He stole Chris Jericho’s line and said, “The Creative’s bad.” He went on to say “You can’t defend that. That was a bad start to the show.” Then he forced Paige to admit that it sucked.
