Torrie racked up 300 penalty minutes a couple of times, but I was watching some fights on the Youtubes, and the Blackhawks homer announcer said Robertson was the only guy with 300 PIM to never throw a punch.

Robertson was not a great fighter in my opinion. I have tons of fight dvds and tapes and watched him and all his cohorts in their time, and he always left you wanting more.

I would offer that in an era of 300+ PIM tough guys, his body of work getting those PIMs was less impressive than most.

As Kevin said, Torrie was at the bottom end of the spectrum as a tough guy. He knew that his job was to fight and did so to keep his job. He did have 2 decent seasons getting 78 points in 2 years with Hartford.

Going old school here but I once had a long conversation with Dave "The Hammer" Schultz when he ran a local ice skating rink. He told me that guys really weren't afraid of him. They knew he could fight but that he really wouldn't hurt anyone. He told me it was Rick McLeish they were all scared to death of. He hardly had any fights because no one wanted a piece of him. He had a left hook that was a killer even on skates. Guys heard about some of his stuff early on and wanted no parts of it.

Interesting, never heard that about McLeish. I imagine he's not the only skill player from back in the day that could handle himself. They kinda had to for the most part. Even Guy Lafleur was a noted fighter and hothead before he got into the NHL. Having a rep, even from Juniors helped back then I'm sure.

Bobby Orr had a reputation for being tough and wouldn't hesitate to drop the gloves, until Harry Sinden convinced him to focus on other aspects of his game.

A lot of his fights are on tape. They usually don't amount to much, but fights were different before the era of multiple enforcers began.

Here's the clip I was watching. Torrie doesn't seem to mind mixing it up despite what the Blackhawk's announcer says. Fun old Norris Division game.
