few title changes surprised me as much as that one. Very well done in that respect, but I hated it.

No one expected that just 3 months after the Steamboat-Savage WM classic. I remember being pretty shocked seeing this when it aired on TV. It wasn't much of a match from what I remember, and HTM won with some roll through and his feet on the ropes or something. Years later I found out that Steamboat was being punished for wanting to spend more time with his family.

You really have to consider the context of this to realize how big of an upset it was. This was monumental at the time. The I/C title was the “workers” title. Steamboat has been built up through the IC victory at Mania III to just a notch below Hogan level. Honky was generally regarded as a buffoon to that point although starting to generate real heat. I didn’t know this was going to happen (back then occasionally I would call the Coach Kurt hotline to get taping spoilers). This was an unbelievable shocker.

Totally forgot he was using the original HTM theme song. And it's funny to hear Vince bury Steamboat right at the beginning by saying "he's not a worthy opponent". Legit hated this match and the result, but had no clue it's because Steamboat wanted to go home. And Bruno called it straight to put over the Steamboat burial as well.

Taped at the Aud in Buffalo. I still can't believe I didn't go to this show. I hadn't even learned yet that TV tapings in that era were the absolute drizzling shits. Five interminable hours of dreck. Anyway, the next day in school, those who had gone spread the word that Steamboat had lost and I refused to believe it. I thought Honky was a great character at the time. I don't think his heat was channel changer. Unfortunately, they kept the belt on him a tad too long.

I remember being shocked and disappointed seeing the title change. Even as a little kid mark I thought Steamboat would hold it for a long time because I thought the angle with Savage was so epic. My dad was like Ricky will win it back because HTM had to cheat by grabbing the rope., but nope.

Wasn't Butch Reed suppose to win the belt instead of HTM?

Butch Reed was supposed to win every title, but I don't know if any of those rumors were true.
