A few years ago, when I went to working our Weekend Work Program, I found an idiosynchrasy when it came to our time off policy that worked against us. Normally you accumulate PTO into a bank, and use it throughout the year. There's a cap of 318 hours, which most never get close to since they use their hours. At the time I would earn @ 214 hrs a year, but would keep my banked totals close to 300.

When I switched to weekends, you have limited use of PTO hours, since you're only working 2 days a week, but getting paid for a full week. Basically I was earning my hours, but could only use 2 weekends a year off (which ran 72 hrs) So for people who had little in the bank it wasn't an issue, but for those who already had 200+, you would max out your hours quickly, without the ability to knock it down based on the restrictions.

So I pointed this out to our HR, then our Chief Nursing officer with no success. I showed them how the people on weekends, not just at my Hospital, but everyone who worked in the whole system, would start losing the ability to accumualte owed PTO hours and were getting them in effect stolen from them. They blew me off and told me they couldn't do anything.

Next step was to then take this up to the CEO of my Location, then eventually the CEO of the whole system. So on Monday I got word from my Chief Nursing Officer that they had capitulated, and are now buying back hours over 100 in the bank for anyone on the weekend program at the end of each year. Today I got notice that they just bought back 186+ hours and a check was cut to pay that out tomorrow. I checked with a few other people in the program and they were all cut checks as well.

So going forward, at least for the time being, this should be a decent extra payout at years end.

Aren’t they gonna tax the shit out of those hrs if you take them all at once?

Pretty much, but I should recoup some of that in April. But I'll take getting any of those hours payed out, vs not getting any value from it in the past.

My place of work has gone the opposite direction the past few years. We've got three different buckets of days off, with PTO being the primary. First they took away the ability to sell back unused non-PTO days at the end of the year, which used to be a nice way to fund Christmas. Then starting on January 1, 2019, they lowered our PTO maximum by 40 hours. We still earn the same amount of hours each year but now we hit our ceiling quicker, which means you stop accruing until you get back below the limit. I'm sure some bean counter's getting a nice year-end bonus this week for that stunt.
