70s and 80s territories wrestler. A main eventer in Florida for a while, but by most accounts he was best suited to the wild-card.

Greg Oliver obit incoming no doubt.

Flair kinda bitched about him in his book. Claimed Eddie Graham and Dusty were trying to sabotage his first title run by booking him with Charlie Cook.

Maybe you are thinking of Bob Cook. Charlie Cook retired in '84 and never worked as a jobber (or at all) for WCW or WWF.

I think you're probably right.  Thanks.

I think you're probably right.  Thanks.Bob Cook was a MAJOR collector of Evel Knievel merchandise.  My cousin sold him a pinball machine when he was going broke and needed to sell his stuff.  Cook drove halfway between Florida/Georgia (can't remember exactly) and Wisconsin and my cousin met him in the middle.

Now - why the hell did Flair think Dusty and Eddie Graham were trying to sabotage him by booking him against Charlie Cook?  Was Cook a shooter, or just the drizzling shits?

Flair vs Cook matches didn't fill arenas, thus Flair thought he was being short-changed and would have made more money with an opponent who was a better draw. Nothing to do with Cook's in-ring skill.

Bob Cook being an Evel Knievel fan makes sense in a way since his tights were often red, white, and blue with stars.

Dusty Rhodes got a 3 or 4 month run as NWA World Champion and likely wasn't happy about losing the title to Ric Flair who was clearly going to be the main holder of the belt for the upcoming years. Who was Charlie Cook? He had no big profile at the time despite the Florida push and fans there likely didn't buy him as anyone that would beat Flair. The idea on the part of Rhodes and Graham, if Flair is to be believed, is that they wanted to saddle him with a weak challenger so they could tell the NWA board that Flair was a lousy draw as champ and that the belt should go back to Dusty.

The thing that undermines Flair's argument is that he when he first came to Florida as NWA World Champion in late 1981 and early 1982, he faced a wide variety of opponents. It's not like he spent a week or two just facing Charlie Cook. In fact, it looks like Cook got only two shots, one in West Palm Beach and another at a spot show in Punta Gorda on the West Coast of Florida between the Tampa Bay area and the Fort Myers/Naples area. Shots at the higher profile buildings went to the likes of Jack Brisco, Dusty Rhodes, Mike Graham, Wahoo McDaniel, and Mr. Wrestling II. Pat O'Connor, who was in Florida to be a special guest referee for some of the Flair matches got a non title match with Flair on TV at the Tampa Sportatorium.

Didn't Flair job to Scott McGhee, or what ever the fuck his name was, in Florida. Maybe a time limit draw.
