Rest In Peace

TORONTO -- Neil Peart, drummer and lyricist for Canadian rock band Rush, died Tuesday at age 67, according to a representative for Geddy Lee.
A family statement says Peart died in Santa Monica, Calif., after battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, for more than three years.
"It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news," his Rush bandmates said in a joint statement on Friday.
"(Our) friend, soul brother and band mate of over 45 years, Neil, has lost his incredibly brave three-and-a-half year battle with brain cancer."
Born in Hamilton, Peart joined Rush in 1974, after the band's first album, replacing original drummer John Rutsey.
Rush has enjoyed considerable success in both the U.S. and Canada. Several of their albums -- "2112," "Moving Pictures," "All the World's a Stage" and "Exit ... Stage Left" -- have sold more than one million copies each in the U.S. alone.
In 1997, Peart -- along with bandmates Lee and Alex Lifeson -- became the first rock musicians to be inducted into the Order of Canada.
They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
"We ask that friends, fans, and media alike understandably respect the family's need for privacy and peace at this extremely painful and difficult time," the band added in their statement.
"Those wishing to express their condolences can choose a cancer research group or charity of their choice and make a donation in Neil Peart's name. Rest in peace brother. "
Peart is survived by his wife, Carrie, and their daughter, Olivia Louise Peart.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published Jan. 10, 2020.

Still in shock, they all kept this incredibly well hidden. Especially battling it for three years.

Condolences to his family and thanks for the music.

He died on Tuesday and they just announced it now. I thought I missed something with the brain cancer but I guess no one knew. And here I was wasting my Dead Pool drummer pick on Frankie Banali instead.

Not only was it well hidden, he died on fucking TUESDAY.  They didn’t even report it until after they had time to mourn.  While I think that’s great because the families and band mates deserve that respect, how often has this happened in the past 30 years?  Talk about the ultimate respect that this didn’t leak out - it was put out when they wanted it to be.  You talk about not knowing he was sick, that’s another rarity in this day and age.  But I had the feeling something was up when they decided to retire...and stay retired...while they still were seemingly physically fit and mentally still into the music.  I didn’t think anybody had brain cancer or something that bad.  The timeline shows he got this within a year of retirement, but he HAD to be feeling shitty in some way if he wanted to retire.  It could have been some basic arm or leg movements that he attributed to aging, but the cancer had started deep in his brain.

These guys were so good they even released the news on a Friday afternoon, the classic burial ground for big stories.

Wow, this came out of nowehere, especially the brain cancer. I was just looking up Rush no too long ago and there was never anything about Neil with the disease.

Definitely one of my favorite drummers growing up. I am a big fan of Rush despite being laughed at by a lot of my friends growing up.

Rest in Peace.

He came off as extremely arrogant, including those times where he claimed he wasn’t a drummer, he was a percussionist.  Geddy and Alex were very personable, and he just was a pouting prick.  A very old friend supposedly ran into him in Toronto in the mid-‘80s, and didn’t “fanboy” him, just walked up and said hello and he admired his work.  Again allegedly, he just got waved off, not even a hello.  No, Neil owed the guy nothing, but a simple hi or a smile, thumbs up, even a “good luck bro”...he got nothing but attitude.  To put this in perspective, my wife was in an elevator in NYC in ‘08 and James Gandolfini walked in with either his accountant or attorney, and he smiled at my wife and said hello before my wife even had a chance to blow him.

Although I doubt Peart was a fan, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau tweets his condolences: "We've lost a legend. But his influence and legacy will live on forever in the hearts of music lovers in Canada and around the world. RIP Neil Peart."

Talk Is Jericho has recorded a one hour podcast on memories of Peart with Jericho, Mike Portnoy, and Charlie Benante.

Actor Jason Segel played a huge Rush fan twice, in the series “Freaks and Geeks” and in the movie “I Love You, Man”.

He released this statement: “I’m so sad to hear about Neil Peart’s passing. Drumming to ‘The Spirit of Radio’ was one of my happiest moments. Getting to know Neil even the tiniest bit, and gush with (Paul) Rudd about our love for Rush, will be something I remember forever. He was an amazing talent and a good man. We will miss you Neil.”

It's very sad for me. I'm glad I got to see them, in Toronto and on the night they recorded the "r40" show, in 2015. Saw them about 7-8 times before that, going back to 1992.

In 2015, the immigration officer at YYZ (yes!) asked me the standard question of: "why are you in Canada?" When I told him it was to see Rush, he got a big grin and said: "aw, hell yeah. My brother saw them the other week. Wish I was going!"

Very important band for me, growing up. Probably what turned me on to hard rock, at the age of 7 in early 1982, when my big bro showed me "Moving Pictures". We had so many fun times blasting Rush and they definitely proved to be the soundtrack for not just our childhoods, but our lives. I can't think of Rush without thinking of my brother.

I remember hearing rumors of Neil's health as far back as 1992, though. This was in the days before the Internets, so they were mostly made-up rumors or else people got the info about his wife and/or daughter mixed up (his first wife died of cancer in 1998). When they did their "Test for Echo" tour in 1997, they played 2112 in its entirety...and someone told me: "well, Neil's been in bad health, so they probably want to do it one last time". Just kinda' sick that these rumors had floated around them for almost 30 years.

If it's still on Netflix, you should check out "Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage". Great documentary about the band. Neil even has a bit where he explains that, yeah, he doesn't like people and abhors the "meet n' greet" events Alex and Geddy constantly did. The documentary also shows you that they probably weren't just the biggest dorks in music, they may have been the biggest dorks in the world. But I love 'em.

Neil was a loner or recluse whatever you want to call it. you just didn't see him. he didn't live in the same city as the other guys. he would rarely attend events the other two did. he did his own thing. I have read that started when his wife and daughter died. so I think that's another reason this is a surprise to people. because you wouldn't know he was ill because you just just never saw him anywhere unless it was on tour.
