It enabled him to avoid sliding into midcard hell with a release around 2004 and a return in 2006 and 2007 for as long as Heyman ran the revived ECW with a diminishing indy career afterwards. Instead he became a WWE broadcaster, has worked for TNA/Impact, and moved into a mainstream broadcasting career. He's now the morning co-host for CBS Sports Radio Network. It's not as prominent a spot as the comparable ESPN Radio spot, but it's on par with Fox Sports Radio and he gets cross promotion and carriage via CBS Sports Radio Network carrying the Jim Rome Show.
Agree totally. Not making it as a main eventer turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to him.

Still the coolest moment of the Monday Night Wars was when Taz returned to ECW to beat Mike Awesome - a WWF wrestler beating a WCW wrestler for the ECW title. That was a legit "Holy Shit!" moment, the kind that is almost impossible o get these days. Then IIRC HHH squashed him later that week or something.

as a kid, a dream match against him vs Austin was a thought in my mind could headline Wrestlemania when he was in ECW.....thats all you need to know what Heyman did...he was like the baddest wrestler in the planet in ECW. The War Machine intro, BEAT ME IF YOU CAN SURVIVE IF I LET YOU, the black towel, fonzie, the arms folded in the ring with the towel over his head. 96 - 97 was such a great time to be a kid watching wrestling.
