When and why did Roy Shire stop running a full territory and using workers from other areas instead of using his own crew? Was business doing so terrible or was Roy just a horrible promoter? Could it have been possible for Roy to resist the AWA takeover of SF and run the promotion into later in the 80s?

Shire lost his tv spot in 79 and had a major heart attack in 1980. After that he was done.

California as a whole went down the tubes right around the same time. Lebell was finished in L.A. by the end of 1983. Both Shire and Lebell put no thought, money, or energy in their respective territories after 1976 and it was painfully obvious. Hopefully Benlen sees this thread and adds some more.

The main reason was they lost their tv contract. You really had to do some channel jumping  to find Shire's wrestling. That really messed up the Cow Palace attendance. Another thing ..even tho Rose, Wiskowski, Starr, Ho, Smirnoff, Piper,Mayne were entertaining they weren't  Stevens,  Patterson,  or Gomez. When they finally settled on a UHF station SF wrestling was gone (1981). AWA, Central States, Florida,  ICW, Georgia,WWF, ,LA, & CCW struggled for an audience. I dont think any of them lasted more than a year other than WWF and AWA. Only person you knew was George Wells. Late 80's every thing changed again when they started  showing USWA,MIDSOUTH,Continental,&Tennessee.  For two or three years they showed the same 15-20 shows over and over and over.  Wrestling finally came back to local VHF stations with UWF, WWF ,and WOWe.
