45 years ago today a 'club fighter' from New Jersey got his shot at the World Champion, who needed a 'tuneup'

So did Chuck step on Ali's foot on the knockdown? I give Chuck the benefit of a doub. Even without the knockdown, I feel he acquitted himself fairly well. It wasn't close, but Chuck hung in there. Anyone here ever meet Wepner? Total sweetheart of a guy. Very personable and humble. I met him twice and I really liked him.

Wepner is the one autograph that I have that I love. Once you tell his story it's quite a conversation piece. Nobody knows who the hell he is.

I believe more people know him than you think. ESPN aired "The Real Rocky" years ago as either a 30 For 30 or a straight ESPN Films doc. Stallone saw the fight with Ali, used that as well as other elements of Wepner's life, such as him being a legbreaker/muscle, and incorporated them into the Rocky films.

Even in Rocky 3, Rocky vs. Thunderlips = Wepner vs. Andre the Giant in Shea Stadium 1976

Wepner eventually sued and Stallone settled.

I think most sports fans know who the "Bayonne Bleeder" is.  He's pretty much been immortalized as the epitome of the scrappy underdog, even aside from the Rocky movies.
