This is general cost-cutting by FOX and not specific to WWE.  They have also canceled a boxing series called "Inside PBC" and have laid off "double-digit" employees from FS1.  It was a last-minute decision as WWE had no idea the series was wrapping when they aired last week, announcing Bayley as a special guest on tomorrow's episode.  I suppose it's always possible that FOX could re-evaluate post-Covid, but it seems unlikely.  FOX seemed to have high hopes for the show, which never came close to materializing.

This also marks the end of CM Punk's brief return to the wrestling world unless he negotiates a deal directly with WWE in the future.  He didn't appear on many Backstage episodes, but as it turns out he was on the last one, filling in for Christian who was pulled last week to sell his injury at the hands of Randy Orton. WWE completely sabotaged the show by refusing to ever promote when Punk would be on (except for the first time, which FOX insisted on). Since the show wasn’t much of a draw without him, that made no sense and certainly shot down any rumors that Punk and WWE really were on good terms again. Clearly not.

FOX should be pissed at WWE and would have every right to do something more. That show was one of those deals where they are trying to use their WWE license to regain some of the money that they invested - like they did with UFC. They know it's not a huge deal, but they expected a partnership - like they got with UFC. WWE is being a shitty partner and FOX should just cut their losses and move on. I'm sure if they got canceled outright, they don't get paid. And they can't be drawing a very good rating with how awful the Raw rating has been.

Booker T. released a statement today saying that he wanted them to cover other Indie type promotions, such as the NWA, EVOLVE and others.

The show always seemed like a very odd fit for both the WWE and FS1. That said, it's possible the show could return in some form later on. For now, all the sports networks are dying right now because the lack of content has driven the ratings into the ground. It's not just FS1. ESPN, the league oriented networks like NBA TV, and the regional sports nets have all made cuts ranging from drastic to minor. While I agree that the appearance of CM Punk certainly created some curiosity viewing early on and the ratings would have been better had CM Punk's role in the show been pushed harder by the WWE, he never said anything of great interest or impact. I doubt pushing his appearances would have made a bit of difference unless the WWE shot an angle or two leading to his return as a wrestler.

There was no reason to watch that show. Any time anything of interest was said, it was recapped on every wrestling news website and YouTube channel. And there was nothing interesting said, really. Wrestling falls between two stools of sports and entertainment when it comes to analysis. Unless they were going to completely drop kayfabe and do stuff like analyse technique, the show really had no point. Punk slyly criticising the creative didn't really cut it. Why pay to make this show when reruns of old wrestling does better numbers?

The only thing of interest I ever found on the show was just recently when Punk interviewed Bryan, but they only aired 5 minutes on TV and there was another 25 minutes that was left on the cutting room floor and made available online.  So what was the point of tuning into FS1 for it?

There were a few knocks on Creative, a few disagreements with the direction of certain angles.  But it was very mild, and I don't even think that was fake, I just think that they're in the "bubble" and look at things much differently than the fanbase wants them to.  Even Punk, who had nothing to lose and clearly liked tweeking Vince here and there with little comments, never really bashed anything, and that's probably because he really didn't hate most of this stuff as much as the fans do.  Listening to the smarks, they want scorched earth, and these guys just don't hate the product that much.  So there was always going to be a disconnect from what the fans were hoping for and what was going to be said, especially since smarks can be over-the-top in their criticism.  It didn't help that Booker T. dominated many conversations and was the biggest WWE party line guy, even arguing vehemently with Christian on very minor critiques.  He became instant fast forward fodder, and there usually wasn't much left.

FOX Soorts laid off another 50 staffers today, exactly a month after the first round, as the bloodletting continues.
