When the movie of 2020 is made in 20 years, those of us who lived through it are going to say, "Yeah, but they forgot about the fireworks."  This is one of those things that you have to sorta be living through to get because I doubt it'll ever be mentioned in a history book.

So what's going on with this?  Illegal firework displays, some on par with fucking Macy's, happening every single night in almost every neighborhood.  I'm hearing them now as a type this.  My dog has gotten so desensitized to it that she doesn't hide anymore.  Why?  What about lockdowns and race riots made people thing, "We need to set off fireworks every night all of a sudden"?  My personal favorites are the M-80 and Roman candle battles that have hospitalized a few people, something that no one I know can remember happening since the 4th of July in 1977.

I saw a news piece about this last night including the conspiracy theories that Aren’t limited to just

1) the NYFD is selling illegal fireworks

2) the CIA is doing it to desensitize people to when the real bombs start falling

The reporter that created the 1619 project tweeted about one of these or a different one and then removed the tweet or something.

Friends in the city say they hear fireworks ever night now.

It's Winnipeg so odds are that what they are hearing sometimes is gunfire.

Out in the bush here we've got one guy who has a couple sons sharing a brain who shoot off fireworks every now and then as well as other crazy shit but otherwise pretty peaceful.

It's crazy, I have a few friends who live in the city of Hickory (20 miles from me) who have been posting almost every night about the constant fireworks being set off and they get tons of people that live in Hickory posting they hear them too. Then the other night my friend Chris who lives in Shelby, 20 miles the OTHER direction, is posting about the non-stop fireworks in Shelby too..something is up..

Reddit is alight with conspiracy theories on this. It's happening in my neighborhood and I'm pretty far out in the sticks about 75 miles from Manhattan. When discussing a conspiracy theory the first question is "who would benefit"? Now of course the answer is ALWAYS "The Jews". But I can't see that this time. This is a real poser.

We live on the west side of Chicago, and it's every night starting at 8pm and going until 1 or 2am. Every night. Even when it's raining.

Oddly enough, it's been quiet here. Normally the Mexicans will use any excuse to set them off.

I've been reading all the theories about this. The most plausible one seems to be that there is a firework surplus due to cancelled 4th of July celebrations, so there is a black market on professional fireworks. Haven't read any first hand reports of anyone actually buying said fireworks though. Do the fireworks look professional?

I don't know about professional fireworks going on the black market, but there are some fireworks available for consumer purchase that are about as close to professional fireworks as you can get in terms of explosive power, noise, and appearance when fired. Their firepower and the public and self hazard of amateurs using them without understanding how dangerous they can be means that many states that allow the sale of fireworks (some don't) ban the heavy stuff anyway.

It creates a big black market around this time of year with unlicensed dealers from states that don't sell the big stuff going to stores positioned right over the border in the states that sell them and then bringing them home to sell out of the trunks of cars, at swap meets, and elsewhere in the build up to July 4th.

The gang dispute that led to the infamous Golden Dragon massacre in San Francisco that resulted in 5 deaths and 11 wounded when members of one gang opened fire on rivals in a planned hit at a crowded restaurant stemmed in part from a dispute over turf and the resulting revenue from illegal fireworks sales.

Combination of both.  I have a friend who lives in the heart of the city, not far from MSG, and there was a full blown professionally looking fireworks display being shot against his building.  He posted a video he took on Facebook of fireworks exploding against his window on the 20-something floor.

But in my neighborhood it seems like mostly the same stuff that people shoot every 4th of July, except it's every night.  Nothing too crazy, just loud.

This might be a stretch but were any trucks or buildings containing fireworks vandalized or broken into recently?

In dozens of different cities?

Because of all the riots and looting here recently, it's entirely possible that this has happened in dozens of different cities.
