Saito has other plans than to honor 'The Hulkster'

This is one of the first angles I remember seeing as a wrestling fan. I wasn't watching AWA regularly (we only for AWA and Luce's WWA in Chicago at the time, although World Class would debut shortly thereafter).

Always wondered though, did Hogan NOT know Saito was a bastard heel? Where did he think this was going?

Was Saito a face prior to this? I only saw him in the WWF previously when he was in a heel tag team with Mr. Fuji.

Saito used tough but clean tactics and was presented as an international wrestler straightforward like a Brad Rheingans, seemingly someone to cheer for in his initial months in AWA. Some fan letter in an Aptermag even commented Saito for changing his ways. Then after this angle, that same fan wrote another letter taking it all back and decrying how villainous Saito was.

LOL, thanks OFG. I never knew Saito had a short lived face or tweener role in the AWA.

He was also portrayed as a face during his short AWA World title run in 1990.

In 1983 they taped 3-4 television matches with no heel tendencies, and a few house show bouts beating Tom Stone and Buck Zumhofe. It stretched things out for that 2 month run without causing too much suspicion.

He was a heel that could give you a good wrestling match. Alot of guys become 'heels' and forget how to wrestle playing that role. Saito was a good wrestler.

Saito was a former Olympian. Placed 7th in freestyle in the 1964 Olympic games.

I remember watching this. He got the Mask Assassin to Dusty Rhodes treatment. I was thinking Mr. Saito was a strange person to be presenting. Always seen him as a heel

This was the first wrestling trophy presentation I had ever seen. I was a huge Hulkster fan, and never saw this coming.

It was a great excuse to get the Hulk out of retirement.

If you want a good laugh, look at the jobber's body language as he runs up to Saito, gets hit, and then falls to the mat.
