The bodyslam wasn't much but effective nonetheless in turning Luger 'good'

Just watching this clip and refreshing my memory, what a train wreck on commentary. It took me a moment to figure out that they had laid down commentary as a voice-over. Heenan is screaming into the mic using present-tense language "Come on Savage, try!!", meanwhile Vince is talking is past-tense, "And then it looked like America didn't have a chance."

At first I thought the blonde-haired dude on the apron was JJ Dillon, but it appears to be Heenan, who is doing commentary is present-tense.

1993 WWF, everybody.

Vince is at his all time best here though. Watching the whole clip, it's pretty good.

Luger of course would never be able to call Yoko an "over stuffed Sushi-eating Jap" in 2020 though.

The more I think about it, I think this is just a partial clip. Wasn't there a football player or two or maybe a WBFer (body building fed) 'challenger' also?

I remembered that Bob Backlund was one of the participants who failed to slam Yoko so I googled to find some more info.

https://sites.google.com/site/combatsportsalmanac/home/world-wrestling-entertainment/yokozuna-bodyslam-challenge

The rules of the challenge stated that all athletes who accepted invitations to compete would receive a single attempt to body slam the 500+ pound WWF World Heavyweight champion, Yokozuna.

Winner: Lex Luger
Luger arrived as a surprise entrant and slammed Yokozuna after hitting him with a forearm shiver.

The following athletes failed to body slam Yokozuna:

Bill Fralic (Detroit Lions)
Bob Backlund (WWF)
Crush (WWF)
George Martin (New York Giants)
Joe Morris (Pittsburgh Penguins)
Joe Smith
Pete Taglianetti (Pittsburgh Penguins)
Randy Savage (WWF)
Reggie Roby (Miami Dolphins)
Rick Steiner (WWF)
Scott Burrell (Charlotte Hornets)
Scott Steiner (WWF)
Tatanka (WWF)

I question some of the WWF's celebrity choices. Reggie Roby? He was a freakin' punter!

As I recall Scott Burrell (Michael Jordan's favorite teammate to "bully" in the Last Dance) didn't even try. He basically said "Fuck This" and walked away

The stupidest way to turn someone face ever. A German slamming an American and that's meant to be Independence Day rather than Pearl Harbour. On top of which, there was no foreshadowing for a face turn at all. There was no "repentance" from being the egotistical Narcissist. No wonder the Lex Express flopped.
