To commemorate Opening Day, here’s a trivia question, and it’s a trick question so think outside the box and no Googling.

Which non-retired player will make the highest salary for the 2020 season?

No, I specified non-retired. A couple of retired players might be making more than this guy. But I think Bonilla only makes $1.2 million a year so he’s not close.

I just saw a graphic for the top six players (for the entirety of their contracts) after Mookie signed his extension with the Dodgers. I think the top six contracts are Trout, Mookie, Harper, Cole, Machado, and...can't remember the other one...maybe Scherzer.

Now is this a trick question because everyone's salary has been pro-rated so far for 2020, however Mookie just signed, so maybe there's no pro-ration taken into account for this season? I'll guess Mookie.

I'm questioning why you used "non-retired" in the question though. Wouldn't it be common sense that an active player would make more than a retired? Hmmmmm.

I’d stick with that thought.

Sticking to my answer. Not goung to Google it but it's the Korean guy from the Yankees. Saw something about it somewhere, sometime but hell if I remember his actual name.

I think when the 60 game schedule was first announced somebody online posted this guys name and salary.

It's not anyone on the Yankees and I don't remember us having a Korean guy.  Maybe you're thinking of Chien-Ming Wang, but he last played for the Yankees 10 years ago and was from Taiwan.

I googled it and you are right he's not a Yankee but the article I saw it in was worded piss poorly so it made it look like he was a Yankee but a Yankee is the next highest paid player. The author can't write.
It's nobody any of you think it is but I was on the right track.

So I Googled it also, as the suspense was killing me.

Good stuff. I wouldn't have guessed it, but I see how the hint is a key part.

As an aside, what an awful contract. So the team that signed him to that got two really good years before they traded him, and I always wonder if they knew something was up. He fell off a cliff after that, but it may have been coincidence.

I believe #2 on the list is Jacoby Ellsbury, but there’s an asterisk there as he and the Yankees are having a legal dispute over what is still owed. If Ellsbury wins, he will collect $21 million this season, but there’s no guarantee that he’ll win.
