I just heard about this and I'm shocked. Dana was a great player for The Niners. The irony is, he was cool in SF. It was DC that made him a nut.

By any chance was he in Houston in 1972? He fits the description that a certain elderly totally non-racist woman gave.

So I have no intention of defending his crime, he's a disgusting piece of shit for what he did, but a life sentence? You can kill someone and not get a life sentence.

Seems unlikely that he'll get that, that's just the max.  But he's 50 so he's going to get a significant sentence that basically takes away the rest of his prime years.  He's going to be a senior citizen before he's free.
